What is a conflict-free diamond?
Conflict diamonds are illegally traded diamonds that finance conflicts in war-torn areas, especially in Central Africa and West Africa. The United Nations (UN) defines conflict diamonds as "... diamonds from areas controlled by forces or factions opposed to legitimate and internationally recognized governments, which are used to finance military actions against the above-mentioned governments or violate UN Security Council resolutions." These diamonds are sometimes called "blood diamonds". Non-conflict diamonds are the opposite.
