Beijing Tongrentang sued Tianjin Tongrentang because of trademark infringement. According to Beijing Tongrentang, they are the most formal. Tianjin is neither a subsidiary nor a branch, and has no right to use the name "Tongrentang". Tianjin has not made a statement yet, and we don’t know how the court will rule.
However, from a historical perspective, Tianjin Tongrentang really can’t compete with Beijing Tongrentang. Tianjin’s predecessor is Zhangjia Old Shop, and Beijing’s predecessor is Lejia Old Shop. It was the old shop of the Zhang family that bought a stake in Lejia. They were concerned about their feelings when they left, so Lejia allowed the old shop of the Zhang family to use the "Tong Ren Tang" brand name in Tianjin. It's a pity that the younger generations have begun to fight for it, and it is difficult to tell who is right and who is wrong. 1. Four Tongrentangs
There are currently four Tongrentangs: Beijing Tongrentang, Nanjing Tongrentang, Taiwan Tongrentang and Tianjin Tongrentang. Among them, Beijing Tongrentang was formerly the old Lejia store and is also the most authentic Tongrentang; Nanjing Tongrentang belongs to Semicolon and was founded by the Lejia family; needless to say, Taiwan Tongrentang is now run by the descendants of the Lejia family.
Tianjin Tongrentang was formerly the Zhangjia old shop. According to a book written by a descendant of the Zhang family, the Zhang family was making medicinal materials in Tianjin, and their strength was getting stronger day by day. When the old Lejia store failed, they started to invest in it. Later, the Zhang family began to redeem their shares and wanted to set up their own business in Tianjin. The Le family considered the friendship between the two parties and allowed the Zhang family to directly use the Tong Ren Tang trade name, which would save the process of re-establishing a reputation. In this way, Tongrentang began to exist in Tianjin. 2. Competition for descendants
The ancestors have friendship, but the younger generations do not. When the oldest two families passed away, the descendants began to compete for trademarks. As early as the Guangxu period, there was a trial on the case. The verdict at that time was that Beijing was not allowed to open drug stores in Tianjin, but could be opened elsewhere. However, Tianjin can only use this font name locally and not in other places.
From this perspective, Beijing Tongrentang has an advantage. After all, its predecessor is Tongrentang founded by the real Le family, while Tianjin is just a trademark that appeared out of love. Let’s directly consider the owner, Tongrentang in Beijing. 3. Tianjin wants to go public
If such a fight occurs, it is very likely that Tianjin Tongrentang wants to go public. We all know that if today's companies want to make money, they must go public and raise funds, and pharmacies are no exception. However, after Tianjin goes public, it will compete with Beijing. As the real trademark holders, they are definitely not willing to do so. In addition, Beijing Tongrentang is a state-owned enterprise, while Tianjin Tongrentang is a private enterprise. No matter how you look at it, they are the ones at the loss. Once Beijing Tongrentang wins the lawsuit, I'm afraid the entire company's dream of going public will come to naught.
