JIT Intellectual Property: What are the differences between UK and EU trademarks

UK trademarks only provide you with protection in the United Kingdom (composed of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). There is no protection outside the UK. The UK trademark has been applied for with the UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO).

Trademarks filed with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) are called EUTMs (formerly CTM (Community) Trademarks).

EUTMs provide you with protection across the 28 member states of the European Union, making them very powerful trademarks. The current EU countries are: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
