Mark Jacobi’s brand history

So far, Marc Jacobs has developed into a very complete brand. In addition to the main brand Marc Jacobs, the sub-brand Marc by Marc Jacobs has also launched a men’s and women’s clothing series, as well as accessories and perfume series. It also reflects the very Jacobs flavor one by one.

Everyone thought that Marc Jacobs’ talents disappeared along with his weight, but after carefully looking at every detail, they found that there was another charm. Especially the newly launched Bowler, the "dome-shaped long top hat" worn by men, was designed by William Bowler in the 1850s. In the 1860s, it had become the most respectable hat style for office workers. By the 1950s and 1960s, this style even became a standard style for London office workers. Marc Jacobs makes good use of the variety of colors to break through Bowler's rigidity. The top of the hat and the brim are all in different colors, using the coordination between cold and warm colors, especially focusing on crimson, maroon, brown red, and dim yellow, which will be popular in autumn and winter. Earthy yellow, apricot yellow, pine flower green, dark green, indigo, and purple are colors that are a bit old-fashioned and have a 1960s feel.

Jacobs was born on April 9, 1963, in New York. After graduating from the High School of Art and Design in 1981, he joined Parsons School of Design. While at Parsons, Jacobs designed his first collection, a collection of hand-knit tops, which were consigned and sold by Barbara Weiser in her famous store Charivari under the trademark Marc Jacobs for Marc and Barbara.

As a design student at Parsons, Jacobs received some of the school's highest honors: the Perry Ellis Golden Thimble Award, the Chester Weinberg Golden Thimble Award and the Design Student of the Year Award. On a spring evening in 1984, Jacobs showed everyone his high-end collection and the above-mentioned awards. In the audience, there was a manager of Ruben Thomas Co., Ltd. - Robert Duffy. After seeing Jacobs's series, he called him the next day to ask if he was willing to design Sketchbook brand ready-to-wear for Ruben Thomas Co., Ltd. This conversation marked the beginning of a partnership that resulted in the formation of Jacobs Duffy Design Ltd. Their collaboration is based on two very simple concepts: a love of fashion and a commitment to quality. Their partnership and philosophy are the cornerstones of today's company.

In 1986, with financial support from Kashiyama America, Jacobs designed the first collection under his own name. The following year, when Jacobs was awarded the Perry Ellis Award, an award for young design talent by the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA), he was the youngest designer ever to win the award. This earned Jacobs an extraordinary honor.

In 1989, Jacobs and Duffy joined Perry Ellis and were appointed vice president and president of women's clothing design respectively. There, Jacobs created his own brand and supervised other licensed women's clothing manufacturers. In 1992, the CFDA once again awarded Jacobs an extraordinary honor: the Womenswear Designer of the Year Award.

In the fall of 1993, Jacobs Duffy Design Co., Ltd. obtained their own license to start their own design company, Marc Jacobs International Inc., and in 1994, they partnered with Renown Look Co., Ltd. and were responsible for sales in Japan. Mitsubishi Group signed the first use rights transfer agreement for the Marc Jacobs design series. The company has maintained a stable and beneficial relationship with Renown Look and Mitsubishi Group, especially after using these two companies as the sole distributors in Japan of Marc Jacobs, Marc by Marc Jacobs and a range of other registered products.

Soon after Iris S.R.L signed a contract as a licensed manufacturer of men's and women's shoes, the factory located in Venice, Italy, continued to produce all Marc Jacobs series shoes.

1995 marked the formation of a complete men's ready-to-wear collection. This collection comes from what Jacobs and Duffy want to have in their wardrobe.

1997 would prove to be a momentous year for the company. In January, Jacobs and Duffy joined Louis Vuitton, with Jacobs as artistic director and Duffy as director of photography. As artistic director, Jacobs is dedicated to the French family's line of luxury goods, including handbags, men's and women's ready-to-wear, shoes and small leather goods. Later that year, Marc Jacobs opened his first store at 163 Mercer Road, Soho, New York. He was also recognized by the CFDA for the third time and won the title of Best Women's Fashion Designer of the Year.

In the spring of 1998, Marc Jacobs' first advertising portrait, a photo of him and Kim Gordon from Sonic Youth, taken by Juergen Teller, appeared in the magazine. This marked the beginning of Jacobs' collaborations with various artists, directors, models, musicians and actors. From then to now, Jacobs works with Teller twice a year on campaigns for Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs. At the VHI Fashion Awards in the fall of 1998, Jacobs won the Womenswear Designer of the Year award, and in 1999, he received the CFDA Accessories Designer of the Year award.

In the fall of 2000, Jacobs' company launched its first handbag series, and in August 2000, it opened its second store on Maiden Road, a historic street in San Francisco. In September 2000, the first men's series store opened on Bleecker Street in New York, which marked the beginning of turning Bleecker Street into Jacobs Store Street. In December, we signed a franchise production agreement with I.S.A.S.P.A., an Italian company outside Milan, to produce a variety of ties and scarves for men and women.

At the show in the spring of 2001, Jacobs and Duffy introduced his second-tier brand, Marc by Marc Jacobs, whose menswear series was first presented to everyone in the 2001 fashion season. Both Jacobs collections continue to grow rapidly and include footwear, handbags and other specialty accessories. In 2001, Calza turificio Rossimoda S.P.A signed a franchise production agreement with Jacobs Company to produce all Marc by Marc Jacobs men's and women's shoes. In September 2001, Jacobs' company launched its first perfume, called Marco Jacobs Perfume. The fragrance is inspired by gardenia flowers in water. The fragrance was launched at Pier 54 on the Hudson River and benefited 12 New York City area charities.

In the spring 2002 women's perfume advertising plan, Teller's photo of Jacobs and Sofia Coppola won the Best Women's Perfume Advertisement from the Fragrance Foundation. A major event in the spring of 2002 also included the opening of a new accessories store at Bleecker 385. In June 2002, Jacobs won another CFDA award - for the first time in his life, he won the Best Menswear Designer of the Year Award. At the same time, his company opened a men's clothing store in Milan and signed a licensing agreement with Gibo S.P.A., an Italian sportswear company. In the fall of 2002, Jacobs launched a fig-based men's fragrance. The fragrance was presented to the public at the same time as the 2003 fashion show. Jacobs later designed the yoga bag with long-time model friend Christy Turlington***, which was also launched as a charity sale for cancer treatment. Following the opening of a store in Osaka in the spring of 2002, Jacobs opened its first multi-brand store in Aoyama, Japan.

In December 2003, the Marc Jacobs home series was launched.

The collection started with some small designs for furniture accessories, maintaining the tradition of luxury and the high quality that has always been included in ready-to-wear collections. The collection includes crystal, silverware, cashmere pillows and other luxury homewares and is sold exclusively in Marc Jacobs boutiques. Jacobs boutiques and shopping stores continued to operate domestically and across the Far East. Today, Marc Jacobs and Marc by Marc Jacobs stores can be found in seven locations in Hong Kong, four in Too Late, 25 in Japan (including flagship stores in Osaka and Aoyama), and nine in South Korea.

In March 2004, Jacobs Company signed a distribution agreement in Hong Kong and Mainland China with Imaginex Co., Ltd. (the company is a branch of Lane Crawford and Joyce fashion). This is the real beginning of the partnership - Marc Jacobs opened a flagship store in Shanghai in August 2004, and also opened its own stores in Beijing and Chengdu. The Jacobs Company eyewear collection is produced by Italian luxury eyewear brand Safilo S.P.A and was previewed at the Fall/Winter 2004 show. The entire series of glasses was officially completed in the spring of 2005. The first U.S. multi-brand store opened on Newbury Street in Boston in July 2004, and at the Spring/Summer 2005 show, Jacobs launched his third women's fragrance. The fragrance is called Blush, inspired by the blooming jasmine. All fragrances are currently being further refined and manufactured by the company's fragrance partner, Lancaster Group USA. In March 2005, two stores were opened in Los Angeles. A store is located at 8400 Melrose, while Marc by Marc Jacobs is located at 810 Melrose Avenue. Later in March, a store was opened in the Bal Harbor Mall in Florida. In 2005, the watch series of Jacobs Company and Fossil will also be launched and a watch series store will be opened in Paris.
