History of Nanchang Street:
The history of Nanchang Street can be traced back to 10 century. It was a post road opened in the Northern Song Dynasty. The Post Road connects the south of Suzhou and the north of Changzhou, parallel to the ancient Shui Yi Canal. Machanglong, located at the northern end of Nanchang Street, is the former site of the ancient Xishan Post Office. Posthouse is a transportation organization that successive dynasties relied on to deliver official documents, meet transit officials, rest and board, and transfer to cars and horses. Machanglong is an important land and water post station because it is located at the crossroads of land and water.
Nanchang street is engraved with many historical marks. The original Huangni Bridge was built in the Southern Song Dynasty, and the Nanchang Bridge, Rihui Bridge and Qingning Bridge (Qingming Bridge) were built in the Ming Dynasty. From nanzenji to the banks of Qingming Bridge, eight Ming and Qing archways were built.
Nanchang Street, the home of canal people, is still full of vitality. This Shili old street has now become the epitome of Wu culture, water culture and Buddha culture in Wuxi ancient city for thousands of years.
