Mongolia is a member state of the Paris Convention for the Protection of Industrial Property, the Madrid Agreement on the International Registration of Marks and the World Intellectual Property Organization. It joined the Madrid Agreement on April 21, 1985, and joined the Madrid Agreement on June 16, 2001. Japan has acceded to the Madrid Protocol and is a member state of both countries. Goods and services adopt the International Nice Classification. In Mongolia, the prior registrant of a trademark enjoys the exclusive right to use the trademark. The types of trademarks accepted in Mongolia include: commodity trademarks, service marks, series trademarks and collective trademarks. The Nice Agreement on the International Classification of Goods and Services is adopted as the classification standard for goods and service marks.
