The founder, Bill Bowerman, was a mediocre long-distance runner in college. He had always planned to combine sports and business and make profits from it. . At the beginning of its founding, NIKE had only US$1,200 in total entrepreneurial capital and was registered at the University of Oregon. NIKE was formally established in 1964. Its predecessor was called Le Cordon Bleu Sports. In 1971, Le Cordon Bleu Sports was officially renamed NIKE.

The soles of the first pair of NIKE shoes were made from waffle molds. Bowerman's inspiration came in 1971 when he saw his wife making waffles, and then he got Inspiration: Use a grooved pattern on the sole of a sports shoe to enhance the shoe's grip and disperse impact.
