WeCom is an overseas version of enterprise WeChat, a management tool for internal and external communication based on organizations and enterprises, and a mobile office software integrating multiple office functions and marketing functions. It is a completely different product from WeChat.
After downloading WeCom, users can link their WeChat account to this account and add their own WeChat contacts. Then, WeCom users can send messages, create chat groups and even transfer money among their WeChat friends without downloading WeCom.
Previously, Tencent announced that it would rename the enterprise version of WeChat from WeChat Work to WeCom. Tencent officials did not even give any explanation for this renaming.
However, the name change occurred after Trump signed the WeChat ban, so it is obvious that Tencent is going to avoid the influence of the WeChat name by changing its name.
In essence, enterprise WeChat and WeChat are different software and products. After Tencent renamed its overseas version, the correlation between the two products continued to decrease.
According to the US Patent and Trademark Office, Tencent registered the WeCom trademark on August 9, 2020. These actions mean that Tencent may completely separate the overseas version of corporate WeChat from WeChat in the future, and will no longer use the name with WeChat to avoid impact.
It is worth noting that the overseas version of Enterprise WeChat actually supports connecting to WeChat, and can even directly import contacts to continue communication through Enterprise WeChat. However, at present, there are very few overseas users of enterprise WeChat, so it does not have much influence. It is precisely because of this that the WeChat ban does not affect the enterprise version of WeChat.
