How was QQ born?

The birth record of Tencent QQ In the summer of 1996, three young Israelis, Visig, Vardy and Goldfinger, got together and invented a way for them to communicate with each other online in real time. Personal "toy", and established a small company called Mirabilis to provide ICQ services to all registered users. Later, AOL acquired ICQ for a whopping $287 million. At the beginning, none of the three young people knew that a toy-like software could create such a huge market and wealth. In 1999, a large number of online instant messaging software imitating ICQ emerged in China, such as the earliest PICQ, OICQ, OMMO, Sina Pager and so on. OICQ, the predecessor of Tencent QQ, was born under such circumstances. On November 11, 1998, Ma Huateng, who had just graduated from college, and his college classmate Zhang Zhidong officially registered and established "Shenzhen Tencent Computer Systems Co., Ltd." The company's main business at that time was the expansion of wireless network paging systems. In fact, in 1997, Ma Huateng came into contact with ICQ, which was already very popular internationally at that time, and became its user. He personally felt the charm of ICQ and also saw its limitations: first, the English interface, and second, the operation. It is quite difficult, which makes ICQ not particularly popular although it is widely used in China. Ma Huateng and his partners immediately saw the light of hope for Chinese instant messaging software. In February 1999, Tencent launched the first test version of OICQ on the Internet. But at that time, QQ was extremely inconspicuous among the many instant messaging software that emerged at the same time, and its functions were also very simple. However, in just one year, Tencent's OICQ miraculously occupied 90% of China's online instant messaging market, basically locking in the victory among similar Chinese instant messaging software. Became the first myth of China’s Internet era. Later, many people have been questioning why QQ, which does not have particularly good functions, finally succeeded by monopolizing China's instant messaging software market with huge advantages. In fact, the success of QQ does not lie in how powerful its functions are, but in its very reasonable interface design and simple user operation. Compared with other online instant messaging software of the same era as QQ, such as Sina pager, OMMO, etc., their initial The functions are not weaker than QQ, especially OMMO, which launched much more powerful functions than QQ when it was first launched, such as email, network hard drive, etc. However, too many functions make users feel that the operation is very cumbersome, which is an important reason for its failure. But while Tencent and his OICQ were enjoying success, trouble arose. The American AOL company (AOL, which acquired ICQ) sent a lawyer's letter to Tencent. ICQ is a registered trademark of AOL, so any similar product that uses the word ICQ in its name Software has the risk of infringing AOL's trademark rights. Request Tencent to change the name of OICQ, otherwise it will go to court. Therefore, in the OICQ2000 Build 0325 version, OICQ made another change to protect itself in advance. The 0325 version called itself "QQ2000" from the beginning of the installation file to avoid legal conflicts with ICQ. This QQ was originally a way of thinking about OICQ among netizens. The nickname unexpectedly became the official new name of OICQ overnight. It is not difficult for us to see a fashion poster on various occasions. A chubby penguin proudly said: "Don't call me, QQ me!". This penguin has become the domestic Internet record holder and has also become a miracle in the international Internet industry. According to the latest official data from Tencent, Tencent QQ has released more than 400 million user numbers. In the cold winter of the Internet, Tencent’s penguin is getting fatter and fatter.
