The origin of the name of Longyan City, Fujian Province

1. One theory is that Longyan is named after Longyan Mountain. 2. Another theory is a legend. Once upon a time, this was Kucao Town in Xinluo County. In the first year of Tang Tianbao (742), when the county was established here, there was a famous scenic spot called Longyan Cave on Cuiping Mountain in the south of the city. The name Longyan County has a history of more than 1,200 years. There is a legend about the origin of Longyan.

Legend has it that a long time ago, the Dragon King of the East China Sea had nine sons. These nine little dragons are cruel by nature. Taking advantage of the power of their father, Ao Guang, who is the Dragon King of the Four Seas, they do evil and cause trouble along the coast of the East China Sea, causing frequent disasters for the people here. The common people hated these nine little dragons for their perverse behavior, but they could do nothing about it. One year, Nezha passed by here and heard the complaints of the people. He felt very sympathetic and went to the East China Sea to settle accounts with the old Dragon King. Because the old Dragon King had not returned from a business trip, nine Dragon Princes came out to challenge him. These nine dragon princes are usually arrogant and can make trouble, but their magic skills are mediocre. They are no match for Nezha. They fought for less than three rounds, and 8 of the nine dragon princes were captured, skinned, cramped, and their bodies abandoned on the beach by Nezha.

It is said that the ninth Dragon Prince was so frightened when he saw that his brother was dead that he ran to the seaside to beg Nezha for mercy. Nezha saw that Long Laojiu was too young, so he showed mercy and captured him to Kucao Town and locked him up in a cave in Cuiping Mountain. He used a demon-suppressing stone to block the entrance of the cave so that he could repent and rehabilitate himself and prevent him from harming him again. After leaving the key to the demon-suppressing stone to a monk at the foot of the mountain to guard it, he stepped on the hot wheel and flew into the clouds and fog back to heaven.

Because the little Kowloon was in the cave, it slowly grew into a big dragon. It thought the cave was too small, so it often turned over and used its horns and body to prop up the cave and make it bigger, so that it could live more comfortably. It pushed and pushed, and opened many small stone caves. The upper cave can reach the sky, and a ray of sunlight has shined in. The lower cave can open to the East China Sea, but there are small fish and shrimps bringing rice and salt for it to eat. It turned out that Dragon King Ao Guang came back from patrolling the sea and saw the tragic scene of a group of dragons being murdered on the beach. He felt very sad and immediately asked the shrimp soldiers and crab generals to collect the bodies and give them a good burial. Suddenly I heard that General Wugui came to report that there were only eight dragon bones and one missing dragon prince. It is estimated that it is not dead and is still alive in the world. So the Dragon King of the East China Sea immediately sent fish, shrimp and water soldiers to the shore to look for it. They went up the Jiulong River and searched until they reached the foothills of Cuiping Mountain by the Longjin River before they found the Ninth Prince of the Dragon King. Since they could not push the demon-suppressing stone, they had to deliver rice and salt through various small holes for the Dragon Prince to enjoy. , as time went by, a lot of rice and salt were stored in this cave.

One day, just as the Dragon Prince was making the cave bigger and bigger, the monk guarding the demon-suppressing stone went out to beg for alms. There was a pregnant woman in front of the horseshoe gate. She gave birth to three daughters at one time. She just couldn't give birth to a Qilin child, and she was often beaten, scolded and looked down upon by her mother-in-law. As the saying goes, having a boy and a girl is natural and she really can't make the decision. So she ran to Cuiping Mountain to commit suicide. She wanted to commit suicide by hitting her head on the demon-suppressing stone, because the demon-suppressing stone was holy and she was very afraid of lochia. When the pregnant woman hit her head against the demon-suppressing stone, it fell down and a plume of yellow smoke immediately came out of the cave. When she looked in dizzy, she saw a golden dragon on the stone wall of the cave. Flying upward, she said in surprise: "Ah! Golden Dragon." She saw the golden dragon falling from the top of the hovering cave, unable to hold on, rolling uncomfortably in the cave, and then dying. The pregnant woman was shocked when she saw it and ran away quickly. From then on, there were traces of the "golden dragon" holding up the cave on the rock at the top of the cave. The entire dragon scale is printed on the top stone wall. When the monk came back from begging for alms, he found that the demon-suppressing stone had been poured out. Knowing that something was wrong, he immediately re-sealed the entrance of the cave, but he couldn't seal it no matter how hard he tried. As a result, a group of young monks were sent to guard the cave door to prevent the golden dragon from escaping.

Let’s talk about this little golden dragon. After three years of practice, he has realized the power of calling wind and rain, so he secretly made a wish. In the past, the eight dragon brothers brought disasters to Kucao Town and harmed the people, which led to such a tragic end. Now, when it comes out of the Dragon Cave, it must bring blessings to Kucao Town, so that the weather here will be smooth, the harvest will be plentiful, talents will emerge in large numbers, and a real dragon will come to the world. But because the monk didn't understand the little golden dragon's good wishes, he still moved big rocks to block the entrance of the cave, for fear that it would come out and cause disaster. On a bright, clear night, the little golden dragon couldn't rest any longer. Because the place was suffering from a severe drought, it turned over and rushed out of the cave. This attack was so powerful that it alarmed the people of Kucao Town. All the monks and the masses came running, some grabbed the dragon's head, some held the dragon's tail, and some tied the dragon's four claws with ropes to prevent the golden dragon from flying.

As a result, the kind-hearted little golden dragon only rolled halfway up the mountain before being dried by the scorching sun and died on the mountain. Over time, the little golden dragon on the mountain shed its dragon scales and rotted its flesh, leaving only a dragon skeleton on the mountain. Later, in order to commemorate the little golden dragon, people called this mountain ridge Longgu Ridge, and those monks were The little golden dragon was trapped to death and dried by the sun on the hillside. Finally, it turned into stone and was called the Monk's Stone. The dragon cave supported by the little golden dragon still exists today and is called Longyan Cave. There are rugged rocks in the cave, and the scales of the dragon on the top of the cave are clearly visible. This incident later spread to the ears of the official at that time. The official went to see the Long Cave, and it turned out to be true. When Kucao Town was upgraded to a county, the cave was named after the cave and Longyan County was submitted to the emperor for approval. This is the origin of Longyan.
