Red-billed ducks usually live in freshwater lakes, but they also move in groups in farmland, ponds, dams and seasonal rivers. They are highly socialized and gregarious species. At the end of the breeding season or dry season, the number of colonies can reach several thousand, and it can reach 500 thousand in Lake Nano in Botswana. Activities are mostly selected in the weeds in the swamp area near the water. The male duck's call is similar to the rhythm of the telephone, and the female duck's call is very soft.
Red-billed ducks mainly feed on roots, grass seeds, leaves, grass fruits and rice in swamps and lakes, and also eat invertebrates.
