·Chen Niangkang
Chen Niangkang (? 1854): a native of Dachanglong Township (now part of Puning), Western Udu. According to research, he was the leader of the Hongbing peasant uprising in Chaozhou Prefecture on Tiandihui East Road in Guangdong in the late Qing Dynasty. Since the Jiaqing and Daoguang dynasties, the Qing Dynasty has been beset by political corruption at home and abroad, and peasant uprisings have occurred one after another. At that time, wherever the rebels went, they destroyed government offices, opened prisons, opened warehouses to help the poor, and punished corrupt officials, cruelty and evil gentry. In the fourth year of Xianfeng (1854), Chen Niangkang and Zheng Youchun of Meihua Township gathered a crowd in Chendian Ruins to raise the banner of "loyalty, justice and peace". In the early morning of March 22, hundreds of rebels broke into the west gate of Chaoyang County in thick fog and broke into the guerrilla office. Magistrate Wang Zheng ordered the city gates to be closed tightly to defend Li Conglong, who led his officers and soldiers to resist and fired nozzle fireworks. After fierce street fighting, the rebels fell into the city and withdrew, and more and more people were active in the suburbs. In April, Wu Jun, the prefect of Chaozhou, heard that Huizhou Vice-General Ying Bao and Zhang Kun, the patrol officer of Chengsi, went to Chaoyang to suppress them. Ying Bao fought fiercely, and Zhang Shan led his troops to station in Wujun, Chaoyang, Shan Bingxia. Ying Bao and Zhang Kun pioneered the clearing. On April 14, Chen Niangkang led his troops to attack Dabu and Xiacun in Sima Pu, luring the enemy into a muddy field, and then ambushed the officers and soldiers. Nearly 10 leaders including Ying Bao, Zhang Kun, Foreign Affairs Committee, General Qian, and General Ba were captured. He killed Wu Jun and retreated to Chaoyang County. Chen Niangkang took advantage of the victory to pursue and divided his troops to occupy Dachanglong, Xiashan, Simapu, Shijing, Sangtian, Meihua, Shalong and other places. On April 27, Chen Niangkang marched into the county town and fought fiercely. Shuangwang's officers and soldiers were defeated and retreated into the city. On the 29th, the rebels were stationed in the southwest of the city. On the third night of May, the rebels placed gunpowder on the Nanmen Bridge that could not detonate due to rain. They then set up a ladder to climb the city but were shot back by the officers and soldiers with guns. On the morning of the fourth day of the lunar month, the rebel army divided into two groups to attack the city. The east road crossed the Red Bridge and killed Cai Ya, a soldier from Lingdong Township, and approached Bagongchi. The north road occupied Wanglou Ridge and then marched to Beitan. At Bagongchi, the soldiers guarding the tents fired Baizi cannons and the Huizhou gunmen carried out an attempt to attack the city. The army on the north route also retreated due to the Houxi Township soldiers and the gunmen carrying the gunmen blocking the attempt to attack the city. A few days later, the rebel army gathered more than 10,000 people in Shigang Mountain to besiege Chaoyang City again and divided their forces to attack Huilai. On May 12, the rebel army captured Huilai County and captured alive the county magistrate Sun Tingying, the guerrilla Sun Dingjia, the apostle Peng Ruilong and others and executed them on the spot. The rebels opened warehouses to help the poor, punish evil gentry, and resolve grievances for the people. The rebel army passed by Huilaihua Lake and saw a big man escorting a young woman to remarry, thinking that she would be executed for violating the clan rules, so they stopped her and publicized that the three obediences and four virtues were against the laws of heaven and should be abolished, and the young woman was released in public to make people happy. Then Puning Beishan Xu Amei responded to the uprising, and the Tiandihui Chaozhou East Road rebels surged.
In June, Chen Niangkang died in the army. Wu Jun's army took advantage of the situation to attack Meihua Village. Zheng Youchun fled overseas, and the rebel army collapsed.
