Hsu Wenlong was born in Taiwan on February 25, 1928. When he was a child, his academic performance was poor. He took two elementary school entrance examinations in a row, but no school even looked at him. In the end, his parents asked for help, and he reluctantly entered middle school as an "alternate". At the age of 22, he graduated from the Mechanical Department of Tainan Polytechnic School and ranked last in the class for three years. But Xu Wenlong has a strong business sense. As early as the Japanese colonial rule, he knew how to make use of idle resources and barter for profit. In 1950, Xu and his son bought a small store in Asakusa, Tainan, and ran a children's clothing business. His father believed that in order to have a prosperous business, the products must be both "strange" and "beautiful", so he named the store "Chi Mei Hang". This is the origin of today's "Chi Mei Industrial". In 1953, 26-year-old Xu Wenlong established "Chi Mei Plastic Company" with NT$100,000, mainly producing plastic toys. Although the factory building is only more than 20 square meters, it laid the foundation for the establishment of a group company in the future. After that, Xu Wenlong tried to make "non-breakable glass" and received a large number of orders for fluorescent lampshades in one fell swoop. After all the efforts, the buyer finally caught up with the delivery. After the goods were shipped, the buyer put his brainchild on the fluorescent lamps, only to find that the lampshades "could not be covered" at all.
In October 1959, after returning to Taiwan after traveling to Japan to gain experience, Hsu Wenlong invited his brothers and sisters to jointly raise 2 million yuan to establish Chimei Industrial Company and use "acrylic glass" (ACRYPOLY). In order to register a trademark, we started manufacturing this methyl methacrylate resin. A year and a half after this glass was launched, two major rivals appeared in the north and south of Taiwan. One was Taipei's Xinya, and the other was Tainan's Golden Dragon. After a fierce business battle, Xu Wenlong finally bought Xinya and defeated Jinlongji. Xu Wenlong said proudly: "I know everything about the products produced by Jinlongji every day, from size to color. I even know how many boilers and sheets of glass there are in the factory, how many are shipped every day, and who the buyers are. Know it like the back of your hand.” Jinlongji only knew how to start a war with Chimei, but he didn't know how to keep the business secrets tightly. In the end, he could only lose.
When Chi Mei’s business was on track, Xu Wenlong began to look for more profitable investment projects. In January 1986, Xu Wenlong cooperated with Japan's Mitsubishi Petrochemical Co., Ltd. to establish Poly Chemical Company to produce polystyrene (POLYSTYRENE, PS) with great development prospects, and the business was extremely prosperous. In view of
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene *** polymer (ABS for short) has high added value and good market sales, Xu Wenlong selected it as the key product to establish hegemony. Since the first ABS factory was built in 1986, Xu Wenlong has continued to build new factories and expand the production capacity of old factories so that he can control prices based on quantity. After years of investment and plant expansion, Chimei Industrial's annual ABS output has reached 1 million tons, surpassing the American Wagner Company and becoming the world's largest ABS manufacturer. Xu Wenlong is also known as the "World's ABS King"; the annual PS output is 400,000 tons, ranking seventh in the world.
