Glass mold is an industry-wide problem. For solutions, it is recommended to check out the website of Huashang BSG, a well-known domestic automotive glass manufacturer.
The main reason for mildew is that the glass production process components contain some alkali metal ions. In the process of preparing glass products using the traditional melting method, in order to reduce costs, soda ash is used as the flux. The result is that glass products are prone to weathering (commonly known as mold) under certain conditions. Glass mold (also called anti-alkali) is a chemical reaction caused by the glass being stored for too long or being humid. Under sunlight, rainbows, mildew spots, watermarks, mimeographs, paper patterns, etc. appear on the surface. Glass mold usually occurs on the air side (top) of float glass. This is because the lower surface of float glass is in contact with liquid tin, and a thin layer of tin penetrates into the surface, which protects the glass.
Glass mold can be divided into the following stages:
1. Initially, water or moisture clings to the glass surface.
2. Then, water or moisture diffuses into the glass.
3. Soluble silicates in the surface layer are hydrolyzed and destroyed. First, sodium silicate and potassium silicate are hydrolyzed and destroyed. Caustic soda (NaOH) is formed and SiO2 is separated.
4. The separated SiO2 generates silica gel and forms a protective film on the glass surface, which prevents further erosion.
