On February 19, 1983, the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and the State Council issued a "Notice" and decided to establish China Petrochemical Corporation. On July 12, the founding meeting of Sinopec Corporation was held in the Great Hall of the People.

On January 7, 1994, the State Planning Commission approved the Petrochemical Corporation to build a National Engineering Research Center for Refining Technology and Catalysts based on the Petrochemical Research Institute. On November 9, Yangzi Petrochemical Company established Yangzi BASF Ethylene Series Co., Ltd. as a joint venture with BASF in Germany, and started construction of 120,000 tons/year styrene and 100,000 tons/year polystyrene projects.

On February 2, 2011, Sinopec’s acquisition of OXY Argentina’s assets was successfully completed. On April 23, Sinopec’s first shale oil horizontal well, the Biye HF-1 well, was officially drilled.

On November 19, Sinopec reached an agreement with France's Total to acquire all 20% of the company's interests in the OML138 block. On November 30, the 14th China Patent Awards Ceremony was held in Beijing. Sinopec Corp. won 5 awards, among which "Alkylation Method of Producing Ethylbenzene from Benzene and Ethylene" and "A Hydrogenation Refining Method of Caprolactam" "Won the China Patent Gold Award. On December 18, Sinopec’s acquisition of 49 shares in the British subsidiary of Talisman Energy of Canada was officially completed[4]. On December 27, Zhenhai Refinery’s 1 million tons/year ethylene project won the National Quality Project Gold Award, achieving a breakthrough of "zero" National Quality Gold Award in the history of China's petrochemical project construction. On December 27, China's first toluene-methanol methylation industrial unit successfully completed industrial operation tests at Yangzi Petrochemical, marking Sinopec becoming the first company in the world to possess proprietary technology for toluene-methanol methylation. On December 28, Sinopec Petroleum Engineering Technology Services Co., Ltd. was inaugurated in Beijing.

On January 12, 2014, China Petroleum & Chemical Corporation issued an announcement regarding Explain the causes, penalties and compensation for the Sinopec Donghuang Oil Pipeline leakage and explosion accident that occurred in Qingdao, China on November 22, 2013. The announcement pointed out that the accident caused a direct economic loss of 751.72 million yuan (RMB, the same below), and Sinopec will bear its corresponding liability for compensation. It is understood that the accident resulted in 62 deaths and 136 injuries. Sinopec has designated November 22 every year as Sinopec’s Safety Production Warning Day to comfort the deceased and warn future generations. [5]
On February 19, 2014, the Board of Directors of Sinopec passed the "Proposal to Start the Reorganization of Sinopec's Sales Business and Introduce Social and Private Capital to Realize Mixed Operations", agreeing to make further adjustments to Sinopec's oil products. The existing assets and liabilities of the sales business segment will be reorganized on the basis of auditing and evaluation, and social and private capital will be introduced to participate in the business to achieve mixed ownership operations.
