Lying on the ice to ask for carp

Editor

Lying on the ice to ask for carp is an ancient Han folklore story. The earliest story comes from Qian Bao's "Sou Shen Ji", which tells the story of Wang Xiang from Jin Dynasty fishing for his stepmother in winter. It was regarded as a classic story of filial piety by later generations. The "Book of Jin" compiled by Fang Xuanling and others also included this matter, and Guo Jujing of the Yuan Dynasty included it in the "Twenty-Four Filial Piety". Lying on the ice to seek carp is also an intangible cultural heritage of folk literature in Shandong Province.

Among them, Wang Xiang, the owner of the story "Lying on the Ice Seeking Carp", was listed as one of the 24 filial sons, which is enough to prove that the story has been told since the Yuan Dynasty.

Wang Xiang braved the biting cold wind and took off his clothes to lie on the ice on the river. The ice was warmed, and two carps jumped out from under the ice. He happily took them home to honor his stepmother. This incident deeply moved my stepmother. After his stepmother died, Wang Xiang grieved and was buried according to the ceremony. Wang Xiang loved his younger brother Wang Lan very much. Wang Lan had special respect for his brother. The brothers were friends and respectful to each other, and they were famous far and wide. People at that time called their residence "Xiao Ti Li". Linyi's "Xiaotili" still exists today.

The north wind is howling and the cold wind is biting. Wang Xiang carried a large bundle of dry firewood on his back and braved the strong wind to finally return home from collecting firewood in the mountains. He felt a headache, fever, and general weakness. As soon as he got home, he lay down very uncomfortable.

Just a moment later, the stepmother walked into the room. "Wang Xiang, get up and go and heat the kang for me and your father!"

"I, but..."

Before Wang Xiang could finish speaking, his stepmother He shouted: "Lazy pig, why don't you get up and work quickly!"

Wang Xiang had no choice but to work up the energy to get up and do what his stepmother said.

At this time, my father came back. The stepmother immediately slandered Wang Xiang's father in front of him: "Husband, I don't know what happened to Xiang Jin, but he is extremely lazy. I just found out that he fell asleep without burning the kang. It is really unreasonable!"

When my father heard this, he was very lazy. , immediately became furious. He immediately called Wang Xiang and scolded him without asking: "Xiang'er, today you didn't finish your work and slept in. Why?"

"Father, today I..." "Wang Xiang was speechless. Normally, no matter how much I suffer, I never disobey my father.

"Don't do this in the future. It won't happen again!"

Wang Xiang withdrew aggrievedly.

Soon, the stepmother felt depressed and uncomfortable. My father called the doctor and took his stepmother's pulse. The doctor prescribed medicine, claiming that the only way to cure the disease would be to drink carp soup. But where to buy carp? In this cold season, there is no carp on the market at all. what to do? Everyone is worried about this. At this time, Wang Xiang walked alone to the river outside the village without saying a word.

"Wang Xiang, where are you going?" his father asked.

"I'm going to the river outside the village."

"It's frozen over there in the winter, what are you doing there?"

"Father, leave it alone! "

"That child must have gone there to play again. Look, what's the use of this child? I think it was wasted for so many years. I am seriously ill now, and he ran out. What an unfilial son!" said the stepmother.

Wang Xiang came to the river and saw a thick layer of ice on the river. At this time, Wang Xiang took off his shirt and lay on the ice. Wang Xiang literally melted a piece of ice with his own body temperature.

Wang Xiang cracked open the ice and saw many carps under the ice. Regardless of the cold weather, he reached out and caught two carp.

"Dad, there is it, there is fish, there is fish!"

"Where did it come from?" The father felt confused.

Wang Xiang introduced the process of obtaining fish in detail. Wang Xiang's father and stepmother were deeply moved, especially the stepmother. She was so ashamed that she pulled Wang Xiang and said shyly: "Xiang'er, you are such a good boy. I wronged you for my mother before, and I will never do it again." I will dislike you."

My father also said: "Xiang'er is kind and generous to others, which is admirable! Now, your biological mother can rest in peace."

For a moment, the three of them hugged each other happily, with bright smiles on their faces.

"'Filial piety' is a fine tradition of the Chinese nation. As long as there are people, there must be filial piety. When I wanted to rebuild the Xiaoyou Temple, I mainly thought of it. The role of education to warn future generations and promote the 'culture of filial piety'. China is now entering an aging society ahead of schedule, and the social security system has not yet been perfected. The vast majority of the elderly are still supported by their children and younger generations. Promoting filial piety and respecting the elderly is still a practical issue. The culture of filial piety plays an important role in the construction of spiritual civilization and the construction of a harmonious society," Wang Xiaojun said.

Editing legendary doubts

The first is Wang Xiang’s place of origin.

There was only one Wang Xiang who served as Taibao official in the Jin Dynasty, and he was from Linyi, Langya (today's Linyi City, Shandong Province). He was not from Linchuan, Linchuan, in the Song Dynasty. Cai Weishan, as reported in "The Story of Wo Bingchi" and later generations, said: "He was from Wangjia Village, Linchuan."

The second is about Wang Xiang’s filial piety. According to "Book of Jin", "Three Kingdoms" and "Zizhi Tongjian": "Wang Xiang (184~268), whose courtesy name was Xiuzheng, was from Linyi, Langya." Wang Lan, his son, was several years old. Whenever he saw Xiang being beaten by Chu, he would cry and hug his mother. His mother would treat Xiang irrationally, and Lan would go with Xiang. When his mother married Xiang's wife, Lan's wife would also marry her. * It was because of the illness that his mother suffered. Xiang gradually became famous, but his mother became seriously ill. "In the late Han Dynasty, Xiang lived in seclusion in Lujiang for more than thirty years, and his mother died. (Wei) Lu Qianxi, the governor of Xuzhou, was entrusted with the affairs of the state. The state boundaries were quiet and political reform was flourishing. People at that time sang: "The prosperity of Linyi is due to Wang Xiang; the country is not empty, and it is thanks to Biejia's contribution." "Xiangshi took office and was over fifty years old." "Later, he was moved to Sili Xiaowei, Sikong, and Taiwei. Sima Zhao, the Prime Minister of Wei, was promoted to the king of Jin Dynasty. Situ He Zeng and Sikong Xunkai invited Taiwei Wang Xiang to congratulate him. He and Xun worshiped Sima Zhao immediately when they saw him, and Wang Xiang alone said Wang Xiang said: "We, the three princes of Wei, are only one step away from each other. If there is an emperor and three princes, we can bow to others!" I will not do anything to harm the hope of the Wei Dynasty and the virtue of the King of Jin! Sima Zhao also said to Wang Xiang: "Today I will know that you have taken great care of me." "In the Jin Dynasty and the Wei Dynasty, Wang Xiang was the Taibao. "The reason why Wang Xiang is worthy of honor is that he is filial to his stepmother and does not worship the king of Jin. ”

The above are records about Wang Xiang’s “filial piety” in official history. In unofficial history and other materials, Sun Sheng’s “Miscellaneous Language” and “Twenty-Four Pictures of Filial Piety” record in detail Wang Xiang’s “lying on the ice to seek carps.” " story, but it did not indicate that Wang Xiang was from Linchuan and that the incident happened in Linchuan. Sun Sheng was from the Eastern Jin Dynasty. His "Miscellaneous Language" said that Wang Xiang: "He is extremely filial by nature, but his stepmother is cruel, and whenever he wants to harm Xiang, he will The auspicious colors are cultivated without idleness. In the coldest month, my stepmother said, "I want to eat fish." ’ Xiang took off his clothes and cut open the ice to find it. After a while, the solid ice melted, and a fish jumped out from underneath. Because he offered it as an offering, people at the time thought it was due to filial piety. "Cihai" published in 1979 records: "There is a story among old folk about Wang Xiang lying on the ice to ask for carp. ”

After Wang Xiang’s mother passed away, he had a stepmother named Zhu. He was not kind and said bad things to Wang Xiang's father several times. Because of this, Wang Xiang lost his father's love again. It was cold and cold at that time. Xiang took off his clothes and lay down on the ice to ask for fish. Suddenly the ice melted and two carps jumped out. Wang Xiang caught two carps and returned home to feed his stepmother. Constantly making things difficult for Wang Xiang, she asked Wang Xiang to capture the oriole and roast it for her to eat. This was a difficult task, but due to the induction of filial piety, many oriole flew to Wang Xiang's tent, and Wang Xiang passed by again. One hurdle.

The stepmother still refused to let Wang Xiang go. There was a fruit tree at home, which was said to be a plum tree. The fruit was about to ripen. The stepmother asked Wang Xiang to guard it and not let any fruit fall to the ground. Therefore, when it is windy and rainy, Wang Xiang will run to the fruit tree, hug the fruit tree and cry, begging the fruit not to fall.

After all, human hearts are not made of iron stone. Wang Xiang's stepmother finally. Moved by the repeated acts of filial piety, he eventually felt ashamed of his behavior and finally regarded Wang Xiang as his own.

In "Twenty-Four Filial Piety", there is a theme that is repeatedly expressed, which is "induction". The filial piety of a filial son will move everything in the world and get good rewards. The same is true for this story. The story of "Lying on the Ice Seeking Carp" once again provides another example of the "induction" of filial piety. Of course, most of these induction stories have been processed and amplified, so they do not need to be taken seriously. However, a core and reasonable wisdom can be extracted from them, that is, to serve relatives, you must be obedient, tolerant, and patient, even when you are difficult or mean. You can also resolve it with your sincere filial piety.

In addition, this story also highlights another theme, that is, the relationship between children and stepmothers. How to practice filial piety in such a family? You should be like Yu Shun and Min Ziqian, and use your filial piety to harmonize your relationship with your stepmother, father and half-brothers.

This issue is specially discussed in "Yan Family Instructions: Later Marriage". It is discussed from another angle, that is, descendants are warned to be particularly cautious about remarrying after losing their wives. He cited many examples. Among them, Yin Jifu, an important minister during the reign of King Xuan of Zhou Dynasty, had an eldest son named Boqi. His stepmother sowed discord between father and son, saying that Boqi had evil thoughts towards her, and his father banished him in anger. . Birch composed the piano piece "Lu Shuangcao" to express his ambition. His father realized this and shot his step-wife, and the father and son were reunited. For example, it is said that when Zengzi's wife died, he refused to marry again and said to his son: I am not as good as Jifu, and you are not as good as Boqi. Interestingly, Wang Jun, a minister who became emperor in the Western Han Dynasty, lost his wife and never married. He said to people: I am not as good as Zeng Shen, and my son is not as good as Hua and Yuan. Hua and Yuan are the two sons of Zengzi, Zeng Hua and Zeng Yuan.

In the traditional "Twenty-Four Filial Piety Farewell Records", there is also a story about "Protecting the Brother and Feeling the Mother", which is also related to Wang Xiang. You can read it together:

Wang Xiang Di Lan, Zi Yuan Pass. My mother, Mrs. Zhu, is unkind when encountering auspiciousness. When Lan was four years old, when he saw Xiang being beaten, he often shed tears while hugging him. When the time came, Zhu Shao sent his wife Xiang, and Lan's wife also went there. When auspiciousness comes gradually, it is sometimes praised, and when Zhu benefits something evil, it is auspiciousness. Watching and drinking, Xianggu fights for it and refuses to compete. Zhu was afraid of drinking and hurriedly poured it away. After eating, you must taste it first when you look at it, and you must sit and lie down in the same place. Zhu felt regretful and loved Xiang as much as he loved viewing.

This story is very vivid, and even modern people in the 21st century may be quite emotional if they read it. Wang Xiang's half-brother Wang Lan saw his brother Wang Xiang being whipped by his mother when he was four years old. He often shed tears and hugged Wang Xiang to protect his brother. When they grew up and had wives, when Zhu abused Wang Xiang's wife, Wang Lan's wife also went to protect him. Wang Xiang gradually gained a reputation at that time, and Zhu hated him even more, so he wanted to kill Wang Xiang with poisoned wine. Wang Lan knew about this, so he wanted to take it and drink it first. Wang Xiang fought hard for it and refused to give it to his brother. Zhu was afraid that his biological son Wang Lan had drunk the poisoned wine, so he hurriedly threw it away. From then on, every time he ate or drank, Wang Lan would taste it by himself first, and he would sit and sleep with his brother. Zhu was finally moved and regretted, loving Wang Xiang as much as she loved Wang Lan.

Wang Xiang and Wang Lan moved and influenced their mother with their filial piety, allowing her to return to the moral track that a mother should have. We can also see here that the influence of a filial son is infinite.

There is Xiaoyou Village in Baishabu Town, Lanshan District, Linyi City, which is Wang Xiang’s hometown. In December 2006, the legend "Lying on the Ice Seeking Carp", which has been circulating for more than 1,700 years, was successfully selected into the first batch of Shandong Province's intangible cultural heritage list.

I saw a piece of information saying that there are 3,000 people living in Xiaoyou Village, Baishabu Town, Lanshan District, Linyi City, and more than 95% of them have the surname Wang. Xiaoyou Village is built along the river. This river is called Xiaohe. The story of "Lying on the Ice for Carp" happened in this river. Xiaohe Ningbing is one of the eight scenic spots in Langya. Under the small pavilion beside the lotus pond of Xiaohe River, the stele "Where Prince Xiang of Jin Yuan Dynasty lies on the ice" erected during the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty still stands. This stele was also damaged. Relevant people collected rubble nearby and carefully arranged it to restore the stele to its original state. In addition, Xiaohe lotus root is one of the three treasures of the old city. Legend has it that the lotus root has nine eyes, one more than usual. This eye is the "filial eye". In addition, to this day, there is a stone tablet "Guarding Li Chu in Wind and Rain" by the Xiao River in Linyi. It is said that this is the place where Wang Xiang guarded the plum tree.

Now Wang Xiang’s descendants have built an antique Xiaoyuan by the river, with a sculpture of Wang Xiang holding a big carp in his arms. There is also Xiaoyou Temple in Xiaoyuan, where the Wang family has lived for generations. Xiaoyou Temple was damaged by war, the Cultural Revolution, and the erosion of thousands of years of wind and rain, but there are still several broken ancient stone tablets that can prove that this place is Wang Xiang's hometown.

While conducting a cultural relics survey, cultural relics workers unexpectedly discovered Wang Xiang’s ancestral hall and the “Stele of Filial Piety to Wang Xiang, Taibao of Jin Dynasty” in Laojing Village, Cijian Town, Xin’an County. Stone tablet. Experts say that the discovery of the Wang Xiang Monument once again confirms that the story of Wang Xiang lying on the ice to beg for carps should have occurred in Xin'an.

This time cultural relics workers discovered a stone tablet at the old site of Wangxiang Ancestral Hall in Laojing Village, Cijian Town, Xin'an County. The positive side of the tablet was engraved with the characters "Stele of Xiao Wangxiang, Taibao of Jin Dynasty"; the lower right side was engraved with "The third year of Zhizheng Period". In May, Liang Yi, the general manager of Henan Fulu, and Daru Hua Chibo Dahan et al. stood on the stone. On the lower left are the small characters "Jiayi Dafu, Hebei and Henan Province, Deputy Envoy Cui Tiemolpuhua". There is an ancient poem on the dark side of the stele: "It is a rare thing to be a mother lying on the ice, and the dragon and the sky leave the carp to feel sincere. I send a message to the world that I am the son of man, and he will inherit Wang Xiang's ancient name forever." According to expert research, "Zhizheng" was the name of Emperor Shun of the Yuan Dynasty. The year names, Bodahan and Cuitemurpuhua are all Mongolian names. Therefore, this stele should have been erected by the Yuan Dynasty government in the third year of Emperor Shun's reign (AD 1343). In addition, cultural relics workers also discovered a "stele for the relocation of Jinwang Taibao Temple" here. This stele was erected by Wang Yaxuan, the 51st grandson of Wang Xiang. The stele was erected in the 35th year of the Republic of China (1946).

Experts believe that the capital of the Western Jin Dynasty was Luoyang, and Wang Xiang served as the Taibao in the Western Jin Dynasty. Luoyang has Wang Xiang River and Wang Xiang Ancestral Hall. As early as the Yuan Dynasty, the government erected a monument for Wang Xiang in Xin'an. Xiang's descendants have also been living in Xin'an. There are various indications that the story of Wang Xiang lying on the ice to beg for a carp should take place in Xin'an.
