Are Tritan and PCTG the same plastic material?

Tritan and PCTG, these are two different materials.

Tritan is a high-temperature-resistant food-grade material launched by Eastman in the United States. It does not contain bisphenol A. It is generally called Tritan in China and is high-temperature-resistant PCTG. PCTG is a category of engineering plastics. Tritan is a temperature-resistant PCTG with a temperature resistance of 99-109 degrees.

PCTG is a transparent plastic and an amorphous polyester. The commonly used polymonomer of PCTG is 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), whose full name is Polyethylene terephthalate-1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol.

It is a product of the polycondensation of three monomers: terephthalic acid (PTA), ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM) by transesterification. PET has more 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol polymer monomer, and PCT has more ethylene glycol polymer monomer. Therefore, the performance of PCTG is quite different from that of PET and PCT. ?

PCTG is a non-crystalline polymer polyester. As the CHDM in the polymer increases, the melting point decreases, the glass transition temperature increases, the crystallinity decreases, and finally forms amorphous polymer. The CHDM content in PCTG is greater than 50%.

Tritan’s full name: Tritan Copolyester, is a new generation of polyester developed by Eastman Company.

Due to people’s pursuit of quality of life and health, the market’s environmental requirements for plastic materials are also increasing. For example, BPA (bisphenol-A) will be produced after PC is hydrolyzed. In recent years, studies have shown that long-term ingestion of trace amounts of BPA by humans (including animals) is very likely to have adverse effects on the reproductive system and disrupt the balance of sex ratios. Therefore, some countries and regions have restricted or banned PC.

Manufacturers are facing environmental pressure and are looking for materials that can replace PC. It is against this market background that Eastman has developed a new generation of non-toxic polyester Tritan.
