It is said that when the peony in Penglai Xiandao was in full bloom, the Baiyun Immortal invited the Eight Immortals and the Five Immortals to perform a grand ceremony. On his return trip, Tie Guai Li suggested that they should find their own ways instead of taking a boat, which was the origin of "Eight Immortals crossing the sea and showing their magical powers" or "Eight Immortals crossing the sea according to their abilities".

Later, people used this allusion to describe those things that rely on their special abilities to create miracles.

The legend of the Eight Immortals originated very early, but there are many versions of the characters. For example, the Eight Immortals in Huainan refer to the Eight Immortals who helped Liu An, the king of Huainan in the Western Han Dynasty, write Huainanzi. The king of Huainan was a good immortal and elixir, and later generations passed him on as an immortal. The theory of the Eight Immortals in Huainan may be attached to this matter. In the Five Dynasties, Taoist painters painted the Eight Immortals in Shu, including Rong Chenggong, Li Er, Dong Zhongshu, Zhang Daoling, Yan Junping, Li Babai, Fan Changsheng and Mr. Erzhu.

The Song of Eight Immortals in Drinking, written by Du Fu in Tang Dynasty, refers to eight scholars, including Li Bai and He Zhizhang, who are good at poetry and drinking.

The so-called Eight Immortals were formed in the Yuan Dynasty, but their characters are different. By the time Wu Yuantai wrote Travel Notes of Eight Immortals in the East in the Ming Dynasty, the stories of Tie Guai Li and other Eight Immortals crossing the sea were circulated day by day, and the Eight Immortals figures were also stabilized in the circulation.
