Trees up to 2m in height, with a DBH of 8cm, winter buds about 5mm in length, grayish brown branchlets, oblong stipules, 1-15mm in length, and long hairs and scaly glands. The leaves are oval to oblong, 11-17 cm long and 7 cm wide, the top is short to taper, the base is nearly truncated or round, or the two sides are slightly bent inward to form an earlobe, and one side is often skewed and asymmetrical. The base of the new leaves is often narrow and the two sides are symmetrical, and the back of the leaves is covered with stars and awns or becomes hairless due to hair shedding. Petiole is 1-2 cm long. Male inflorescence 1-2 cm long, inflorescence axis hairy; 3-5 flowers are clustered into clusters, 1-3 (-5) female flowers are well developed, and the lower part of the style is hairy. The sharp spines of mature shell bucket are long and short, sparse and dense. When dense, the outer wall of shell bucket is completely covered, and when sparse, the outer wall is visible. The diameter of the shell bucket is 4.5-6.5 cm. Nuts are 1.5-3 cm high and 1.8-3.5 cm wide. The flowering period is from April to June, and the fruiting period is from August to October.
