Pear wood is the best for making prints. In ancient my country, pear wood was basically used for woodcuts.

The quality of this kind of finished board will not achieve very good results, but the wood grain of the commonly used boards now is in one direction, because it is a synthetic version (three-ply board, five-ply board). Except for the kind of board that cuts the tree directly in the middle, this is rare.

Another possibility is that your wood carving knife is not good. Woodpecker knives bought in general stores are actually not very easy to use. Ancient craft tools such as woodblock printing are very particular, and there are many other tools on the market. Things that can be bought directly are definitely not as good as those made by master craftsmen.

I major in printmaking, and it will take a long time to become proficient in drawing with a knife. By then, the quality of the board will no longer be an issue.
