Joan of Arc (French: Jeanned'Arc; English: Joan of Arc, 1412 - May 30, 1431), first translated as Jeanne d'Arc, nicknamed "The Maiden of Orleans" (French: La Pucelled'Orléans; English: The Maid of Orléans), a French national hero, a Catholic saint, and an important figure in the Hundred Years' War between England and France. Joan of Arc was an important figure in promoting the awakening of French national consciousness. She also became an important symbol of Western culture after her death. Since Napoleon, French military and political figures have used her image in publicity from different angles; the church regards her deeds as miraculous. Major European writers and composers have created works about Joan of Arc, and a large number of movies, dramas and music creations based on her have continued.
