The predecessor of Tsingtao Beer Co., Ltd. was the Germanic Beer Company Tsingtao Co., Ltd. founded in Qingdao in August 1903 by a German businessman and a British businessman.

On July 15, 1993, Tsingtao Brewery’s shares were listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, becoming the first mainland Chinese company to be listed overseas. On August 27 of the same year, Tsingtao Beer was listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange, becoming the first Chinese company to be listed on both places simultaneously.

As of the end of 2015, Tsingtao Brewery has more than 60 beer production companies in 20 provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions across the country. The company's scale and market share lead the domestic beer industry.
