Lu Yu is an abandoned orphan. When Lu Yu was three years old, he was found by Zen Master Zhiji, the abbot of Longgai Temple in Jingling, on the shore of the local West Lake and named Lu Yu. At Longgai Temple, Lu Yu not only learned to read, but also learned to make tea. However, Lu Yu was unwilling to convert to Buddhism, nor was he willing to cut his hair and become a monk.

At the age of twelve, Lu Yu accidentally escaped from Longgai Temple and studied acting in a theater troupe. Although Lu Yu looks bad and has a stutter, Lu Yu is humorous. And then played a clown very successfully. Later, Lu Yu wrote three volumes of the joke book "Dialogue".

In the fifth year of Tang Tianbao (746 AD), Li Qiwu, the prefect of Jingling, saw Lu Yu's outstanding performance at a state banquet. He admired Lu Yu's talent and ambition very much and wrote a book recommending Lu Yu to live in seclusion in Huo. He studied with Master Zou in Menshan. Later, I often traveled with a good friend (Cui Guofu), tasted tea and water, and talked about poetry and essays.

Lu Yu's "Tea Classic" consists of three volumes and ten chapters with more than 7,000 words. They are: Volume 1, the origin of 1, utensils of 2, creation of 3; utensils of vol. 4; cooking of 5, drinking in vol. picture. It is a systematic summary of the scientific knowledge and practical experience of tea in the Tang Dynasty and before the Tang Dynasty. For example, Guzhu Purple Bamboo Shoot Tea from Changcheng County, Zhejiang Province (now Changxing County, Jiangsu Province) was rated as high-quality by Lu Yu and then listed as a tribute tea; Yangxian Tea from Yixing County (now Yixing, Jiangsu Province) was directly recommended by Lu Yu.
