The Beauty and Sorrow of the Rainforest—Exploring the Tropical Rainforest in Xishuangbanna

One summer vacation a year ago, I went into a vast virgin forest with the members of the summer camp.

This is a real virgin forest, as evidenced by the entwining vines. It is impossible to pass by walking upright. You have to bend your knees to cross the vines above your head and the stream below your feet. In some places, you have to rely on the leading teacher to open a path with a machete to pass. We walked carefully and slowly, and the intoxicating green shocked us deeply. This is the bread tree that can satisfy your hunger when you are hungry, the dancing grass that will dance when you hear singing, and the huge taro stalk leaves that look like natural umbrellas... It is a pity that the weather is not good, and the big raindrops fall at the drop of a hat. Coming. "Hold an umbrella! Hold an umbrella!" The friends reminded each other, but in the real forest, it was impossible to open the umbrella. The beauty and magic that had been admirable just now changed color in an instant, and the rain forest looked majestically and silently at a few young people who were ignorant of the world. The best way is to retreat.

Braving the pouring rain, despite stumbling and slipping every step, we finally emerged from the forest. In shock, my friends discovered that blood was flowing out from the leg stung by a locust. In desperation, I looked down at my feet and found a "vampire" crawling on the upper part of the shoe that was stretching its body and shaking. I hurriedly used branches to flick.

Since then, the impression left on me by the rainforest is not only magic and beauty, but also real terror and severity.

In fact, Xishuangbanna’s reputation is far greater than people’s understanding of it.

On this 19,112.5 square kilometers of land, there are only dry and wet seasons, but no four seasons. The rainy, high-temperature, and humid natural environment provides good conditions for the growth of various organisms. The 242,000-hectare nature reserve is divided into five areas: Mengyang, Menglun, Mengla, Shangyong, and Mangao, with mandatory protection for different species. Within the reserve, the ecosystem and forest vegetation are well protected. We are fortunate to be able to step into this magical secret land and have a glimpse of its ten thousandth beauty.

1. Walking into the nature reserve in Xishuangbanna, you will find long-abandoned gravel roads here and there. The air in the forest seems to be filtered and fresh. Taking a deep breath is refreshing. What comes into view is the endless fresh green, verdant. Underfoot is fertile humus soil, with dry, rotten leaves and freshly fallen leaves accumulated layer by layer, becoming the softest carpet in the world. As you swim up the creek, you can easily see the untouched scenery on both sides. At the beginning, there were just some slender trees on both sides. It was not until we entered the hinterland that we realized what towering ancient trees are. The stream flows along the rocks, with a drop of about 1 meter, carving deep grooves on the rock walls, and forming natural bathing pools in the low-lying areas. Sometimes, this bath blocks our progress, forcing us to leap across it like a tiger or leopard in a mountain.

The deeper you go, the more countless beautiful pictures unfold. The guide Xiao Liu suddenly stopped and groped around the broad roots of a big tree. He told us that the shape of the protrusion at the root was like a human figure. After careful observation, it turned out that it looked a bit like an abstract human body painted by a certain master. The eyebrows, eyes, and posture were elegant. Clearly identifiable. Moving forward, "Be careful! There are two cows here." It turned out that the roots of a tree formed a natural relief of "a mother and her son." These strangely shaped and uncannily crafted works of art are nature’s selfless gifts to human beings, and they should be left to the brave people to appreciate.

Unless you are in a virgin forest, you would not know the infinite vitality and natural wonder of tree growth. The two trees are leaning on each other but independent of each other, as if they are a couple; after a long period of time, the broad roots of the two trees are finally connected together, which is called "joined roots"; in order to survive, the five trees have formed an alliance. The big tree points directly to the sky, which is called "five fingers holding the sky"... The birds have eaten the indigestible plant seeds and excreted them on the branches of the tree. A tree grows on the ground, also called the "flying tree". Others such as "Strangler fig", epiphytic fern, parasitic flower, and countless others. Only by being there can you appreciate its beauty.

If you remove your eyes from the towering ancient trees and focus on the flowers, plants, insects and birds, you will definitely gain more.

In this situation, we only regret that we have too little biological knowledge and cannot appreciate the truth behind the beautiful scenery.

The big tree that fell down for unknown reasons was covered with moss, and green vines tightly wrapped around the cracked trunk. The grass received sufficient nutrients and had a chance to challenge a higher goal. Opportunities, flourishing into one.

On the half-dead wood, fungi will not let go of every cycle of life. It is exactly "thousands of trees spring in front of the diseased tree". On a hillside, there is a strange little flower with yellow flowers clustered at the top and dark green leaves that are elegant and luxurious. It grows freely in the wind and is so content that no one can bear to disturb it. What we can do for it is just to take pictures of it and write down our praises.

While we were intoxicated in this extremely magical palace, a dull sound came from nowhere. This sound is not like the cry of a wild beast, it is not the sound made by companions. Could it be that nature wants to stingyly put away its beauty and issue an urging threat? After waiting for a while, we moved on, but no one mentioned the tension in their hearts.

2. Tropical rainforest refers to a type of organisms that are mainly plants and have special requirements for the ecological environment. They occupy the humid or humid special areas in tropical areas on the earth, forming a multi-species and diverse environment. Layered forest. Although Xishuangbanna is located in the subtropical zone near the Tropic of Cancer, its special geographical location and terrain give it a high-temperature and humid environment, and there are tropical rainforests in Southeast Asia with similar compositions, structures, and functions.

There is a great wonder in the tropical rain forest. Even in the dry season without rain, the fog in the forest is as thick as dew and as light as milky white tulle, forming a poetic "fog and dew". Whenever night falls and the morning light dews the next day, the fog and dew in the rain forest make a "rustling" sound, all the way from far to near. The mist and dew collected on the leaves drip down along the leaf tips, like a light rain, hence the name "Rainforest".

For a long time, the local hardworking ethnic minorities have lived in the rainforest, respecting it and loving it. The materials needed in the process of survival and development are all obtained from the rain forest, forming a variety of "ethnic forest cultures". The Dai people have the traditional concept that "without forests, there is no water, without water, there are no fields, without fields, there is no food, and without food, you cannot survive." This simple view of natural ecology has allowed all ethnic groups to live in harmony with the tropical rainforest until the 20th century. In the early 1950s, 50%-60% of the natural forest coverage was still preserved here.

However, over the course of this century, morning fog and dew have become increasingly rare.

Scientific and technological progress and the rapid increase in social productivity have enabled mankind to create unprecedented material wealth and accelerate the development of civilization. At the same time, rapid population growth, overconsumption of resources, environmental pollution, ecological destruction, and the widening gap between the North and the South have become increasingly prominent and have become major global problems, seriously hindering economic development and improving people's quality of life, and threatening all mankind. future survival and development. As far as the Xishuangbanna area is concerned, from July 1990 to November 2000, the number of people increased by 197,039 in ten years and four months, an increase of 24.74%, with an average annual increase of 19,069 people, and an average annual growth rate of 2.16%. In the 2000 Environmental Quality Brief Bulletin, the frequency of acid rain in precipitation acidity monitoring was 8.6%. This is the first time acid rain has occurred in Jinghong City since sampling records were established. The doubling of the population has brought about the doubling of cultivated land, and the rapid economic development has also halved the natural forests.

The tropical rainforest is a classic created by nature over many years. It has been the home of many species for a long time. No man-made forest can compare with its originality, naturalness, richness and magic. I hope more people know how to love it and protect it, and hope this charming oasis will be safe from disaster.
