Xiamen is known as Ludao, Luzhou, Lujiang and Lumen.

Ludao

Xiamen has a warm spring-like climate, with beaches surrounding the island and swarms of fish and shrimp. There are many egrets on the island, and it is known as the "Hometown of Egrets". Egret, a heron, has a pointed beak, a thin neck and long legs, with feathers all over its body as white as snow, and a silky crest on the back of its head. It likes to build nests and live in rivers, lakes, swamps and jungles. At the beginning of this century, there were still egrets inhabiting the island's harbors, beaches, and mountain forests. Since then, due to urban expansion and changes in the ecological environment, it has become increasingly rare.

However, Xiamen people have a special liking for egrets. They call Xiamen "Eludao", Chenggang "Lujiang", and select egrets as the "city bird". They especially like to name their business names and trademarks after the word "Heron". In recent years, the island has been vigorously greened and purified. Thousands of egrets can be seen flying in groups near Yuandang Lake, Huo Shaoyu Island and Lantau Lake. Among the people, there is a beautiful and ancient legend that calls Egret the pioneer of Xiamen Island. According to legend, this island was originally uninhabited. A group of egrets migrated from north to south and multiplied here. They pecked the springs with their sharp beaks, dug clear springs with their sharp claws, and carried flower seeds and grass seeds from the inland to sow them. The flower clusters were like phoenixes soaring in the fire, known as "Phoenix Tree". Now, it is named Xiamen’s “city tree”.
