Gaoyou has a long history. As early as six or seven thousand years ago, there were ancestors living on this land. The Longqiuzhuang site, which represents the prehistoric culture in the eastern Jianghuai region, shows that there was a brilliant human civilization in the territory more than 7,000 years ago. In 223 BC, King Qin Yingzheng built a high platform and a postal pavilion, so it was named Gaoyou, also known as Qinyou and Yucheng.
In the fifth year of Yuanshou (118 BC), Emperor Wu of the Western Han Dynasty, Gaoyou County was established and belonged to the Guangling Kingdom. During the Southern and Northern Dynasties, Guangye County and Shennong County were established, and Linze, Sangui, and Zhutang counties were also divided. In the early Sui Dynasty, the county was abolished and the three counties were merged into Gaoyou County. In the Song Dynasty, two cities were built successively, named Old City and New City. During the Song and Yuan Dynasties, due to the establishment of Gaoyoujun, Chengzhou, Gaoyou Road and Gaoyou Mansion, it took charge of the three counties of Gaoyou, Xinghua and Baoying, making it a prosperous place in Huaiyang. In the Ming Dynasty, the county was removed and a state was established, with jurisdiction over Xinghua and Baoying counties. Since the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, it has been a scattered state. In ancient times, Gaoyou was known as "the famous district of Jiangzuo and the capital of Guangling" in history.
In the first year of the Republic of China (1912), the prefecture was abolished and turned into a county. After the founding of the People's Republic of China, the junction area of ??Gaoyou, Baoying and Xinghua counties underwent several adjustments. During the Anti-Japanese War and the War of Liberation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China, the area south of Chengzi River in Gaoyou County once belonged to Jianggao Administrative District and Jiangdu County, and the Huxi area of ??Gaoyou County successively belonged to Tianchang County, Ganquan County, Southeast County, and Yi County. Yang County and Yizheng County.
Gaoyou County was established after the founding of the People's Republic of China. The junction area of ??Gaoyou, Baoying and Xinghua counties has been adjusted several times. In 1991, Gaoyou was removed from the county and established as a city. In February 1991, with the approval of the State Council, the county was removed and established as a city (county level). On April 1 of the same year, Gaoyou City was officially established and implemented a separate plan.
Customs
When the patient is about to die, the son will kneel down and kowtow to die. At the same time, he will light the head lamp and foot lamp, cook a small bowl of half-cooked rice and serve it at his feet (called for "pour bowl"). Then buy cloth to break the filial piety. The descendants of the deceased all wear mourning clothes: the filial son wears a white cloth hat with cotton balls on both sides, a white cloth wrapped around the waist and tied with a straw rope (some even carry a pair of straw sandals), and a piece of white cloth is covered with the shoes; the grandchildren wear a white cloth with a piece of red cloth nailed on the front. Hats, white cloth tied around the waist, and red cloth with shoe spikes; great-grandchildren wear red hats with red cloth spikes. Nowadays, the funeral ceremony has been simplified and changed to wearing black gauze on the arms, and white, red and white, and red cloth are nailed on the black gauze to distinguish the seniority. Then, the filial son (usually the eldest son), wearing sackcloth and mourning, holding a mourning stick or umbrella, first goes to the home of the deceased (brother or younger brother of the deceased), and then goes to the homes of other relatives and friends, kneeling at the door (not allowed to enter) to report the funeral. When the mourner comes to see the deceased, he will cover the face of the deceased with a piece of paper or a white cloth, which is called "face covering". Relatives and friends come to mourn and kowtow to the deceased (sometimes now bow). The filial son bows down to accompany the deceased, which is called "filial son kowtows thanks".
In the old days, wooden burials were used. When the coffin was sealed, the filial son had a sieve with coffin nails on his head (a handful of the filial son’s hair was placed under the nails), and he knelt down to ask the mourner to seal the coffin. Before the funeral, in some places in Xixiang, the whole family, coffin bearers, trumpeters, etc., take offerings to the south or east intersection two miles away from home, worship in the sky, break a bowl, and burn the filial piety. They wear straw sandals to drive away evil spirits (this is called "building a big temple"), and then go back to mourn. During the funeral (if the spouse of the deceased is young and middle-aged and is allowed to remarry in the future, firecrackers will be set off at this time). The eldest son holds a mourning stick and carries a white streamer, and the eldest grandson walks in front with a red streamer. The other filial sons each hold a mourning stick and support the coffin. When relatives and friends come to offer sacrifices on the road, they stop in the coffin to receive sacrifices. After the sacrifice, the offerings are eaten by those present. To send the deceased back home, they would step across the fire in front of the door, and after entering the door, they would eat cakes and drink sugar and tea to ward off evil spirits. Have a drink in the evening. If the deceased is an elderly person over 70 years old, the bereaved family will distribute "longevity bowls" to guests after dinner.
After the funeral reform was implemented, in rural areas, except for the wooden coffin being replaced by an urn and the mourning stick being replaced by a wreath, other customs were basically retained. After the burial, it is said that the dead ghost wants to "visit the family" during the "first seven days". The whole family will live out on this day, which is commonly known as "Rang". This custom has basically disappeared today, but the custom of "burning seven" (offering sacrifices every seven days) still exists.
