The origin of the rosary
There are four original Sanskrit words for the rosary, which translated into Chinese mean: counting beads, bead beads, chanting beads, thread of beads, Indians have been capitalizing on this since ancient times. There is a custom of wearing necklaces around the body, which later evolved into the use of rosary beads. However, Buddhism did not use rosary beads at first, and the earliest recorded records were around the second century. China began to record the use of rosary beads during the Sui and Tang Dynasties (around 600 AD) and also engraved rosary beads when carving Buddha statues. The rosary was not created by Buddhism, and the rituals made during the Buddha's time did not include the wearing of rosary beads, nor were they included in the "Eighteen Things for Monks". The mention of wearing beads in Buddhist scriptures mostly comes from later scriptures, but there is no mention of wearing them in the Vinaya scriptures. Therefore, Buddhists who follow the Vinaya scriptures rarely wear beads, but in Tantric Buddhism, prayer beads are highly valued. Bead-holding - Generally, larger beads are used, which are held in the hand and used to twist and chant Buddha. The number of beads also depends on the size of the beads and is pierced according to the number of beads recorded in the scriptures.
Hanging beads - Buddhist beads hanging around the neck, usually one hundred and eight. The larger ones are usually worn by monks on weekdays and in Dharma gatherings, while they are rarely worn by lay Buddhist disciples. However, Because sutras and laws do not indicate that Buddhist beads are exclusively for monks, in recent years many lay Buddhist disciples have worn them around their necks. The last four realms are the worlds enlightened by saints, namely: voice-hearers, pratyekabuddhas, bodhisattvas and Buddhist world.
108 pills - means seeking for the 180th samadhi, eliminating 108 kinds of troubles. The 108 kinds of troubles are generally said to be six roots (eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind). ) Each has three kinds of suffering, happiness, and equanimity, which are combined into eighteen kinds. The six roots each have three kinds of good, bad, and neutral, which are combined into eighteen kinds, for a total of thirty-six kinds. How to use rosary beads
Generally, when holding rosary beads and reciting the Buddha's name, you start with the rosary beads next to the mother bead. Every time you recite the name of the Buddha, scriptures or mantras, twist and pinch one rosary bead with your heart. Not counting, if there is a note that every time the beads are twisted to recite the Buddha, one note is moved, and when the beads are twisted to reach the mother bead, the beads are not passed over, but go back in the opposite direction, because according to the Vajradhara Yoga Rosary Sutra, each rosary is worn. It represents Avalokitesvara, and the mother bead represents infinite life or the fruit of Buddhahood after successful practice. Therefore, when twisting the bead to reach the mother bead, you must return it in the opposite direction, otherwise you will commit a crime that exceeds the law. Except for some sects such as Tantric Buddhism that have certain regulations on holding beads, most other records do not have strict regulations. We only seek convenience and freedom in holding beads, and there is no need to force the mediocre method of holding beads. As the "Diamond Sutra" says: "All appearances are false. If you see all appearances that are not appearances, you will see the Tathagata." Rosary beads are also appearances. One, so we don’t care about it too much when using it.
Types of Bodhi
l. Bodhi is the transliteration of Sanskrit bodhi, which means enlightenment, wisdom, knowledge, and path. Broadly speaking, it is the wisdom that cuts off the troubles in the world and achieves nirvana. Because the Buddha Sakyamuni attained enlightenment under the Bodhi tree, Bodhi means enlightenment and the achievement of Buddhahood.
