Wuzhen history

During the Spring and Autumn Period, Wuzhen was the border of wuyue, where the State of Wu stationed troops to guard against crossing the country, which was called "Wu Garrison" in history.

in the Tang dynasty, wuzhen was subordinate to Suzhou prefecture. Houliang, which belongs to the same country, is the land of Wu Yue. In the fifth year of Tianfu in the late Jin Dynasty (94), Wuzhen was located in Wucheng County of Huzhou Road and Qingzhen was located in Chongde County of Jiaxing Road. The town is set up for inspection.

In the fifth year of Xuande in Ming Dynasty, the six townships of Chongde County, namely, Fundraising, Qianjin, Baoning, Qingfeng, Yongxing and Wutong, were located in Tongxiang County, and Qingzhen belonged to it and transferred to Jiaxing Prefecture. Wuzhen still belongs to the Huzhou government of Wucheng. This affiliation has not changed since Qing Dynasty. In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, Zhejiang Branch and Jiangsu Branch were specially set up in Wuzhen, which exercised the functions equivalent to government offices as a small town. In the first year of the Republic of China, the two towns of Wu and Qing were still divided.

in may, 195, the two towns of Wu and Qing merged and called wuzhen, which belonged to Tongxiang county and transferred to Jiaxing. ?

The story and legend of Wuzhen:

Marshal Wen

There is a Marshal Wen well in the south of Dingsheng Bridge, and a Marshal Wen pavilion is built next to it. The pavilion is dedicated to the statue of Marshal Wen, with the title "Marshal Wen Capital", and the left and right couplets are "Protecting the villagers' love for the sun and the moon, avoiding the plague feat and feeling the heaven".

It is said that Marshal Wen was a white-faced scholar, enthusiastic and eager for public interests. One year, there was a drought in the south of the Yangtze River and the river dried up. People drew well water for drinking, and water was as expensive as oil. One day, the scholar found an evil spirit poisoning the well, so the next day, the scholar stayed by the well and refused to let the people get water. Many people who didn't know the truth scolded and beat him. In desperation, the scholar jumped into the well.

When the people salvaged the scholar who had drowned, they found that his face was livid, his teeth were cracked and his eyes were protruding, which was a very terrible symptom. Only then did they know that he was a hero who died for the safety of one side of the people, so they worshipped him as "Marshal Wen" and made a statue for him, hoping that he would have a spirit in heaven to drive away Wen ghosts and continue to benefit the place.

The statue of Marshal Wen looks fierce and glaring, in fact, it is to curb the plague ghost. The day when the scholar jumped into the well to warn the police was May 15th, so there is a custom in Wuzhen that every year on May 15th of the lunar calendar, marshal Wen will be greeted.

When welcoming the meeting, people carried out the statue of Marshal Wen in a sedan chair and patrolled the street, asking him to catch the wandering ghosts of Wen in an urn prepared in advance. The welcoming team is spectacular, with gongs in front to clear the way and hard cards to protect the line;

The two men in the back carried an empty wine jar. There was a ghost with a blue face in the jar, and a rope was tied to his head. The rope passed through the pulley on the handle bar and pulled the rope as he walked. The ghost's head appeared and disappeared in the jar, which was called the plague-collecting ghost. Then two people carried an iron pot with charcoal and flames. It is said that fire can frighten ghosts. Marshal Wen's sedan chair followed;

Finally, there are eight judges holding swords and guns. It is said that in this way, there will be no plague in summer. This is probably due to the fear of plague, and ancient medicine was not developed enough to get rid of plague, so people imagined the image of Marshal Wen to soothe their fears and pray for peace.
