We all want to have soft and glossy lips, but sometimes God doesn’t want us to get it for nothing. If cold, harsh weather and bad habits are wreaking havoc on your lips, try adopting some of the tips below to improve the overall look and feel of your lips.
Method 1: Use lip balm
1. Use lip balm every day. Using a paste containing avocado oil or cocoa butter will give you the best results. Make sure to apply it frequently during the day when your lips start to dry out (usually every two hours.) Apply a layer of lip balm every morning before using any lip product (including lipstick, lip gloss, and lip gloss).
Choose the product that best suits you. Some lip balms contain medicinal ingredients, and some contain strong peppermint extract, which some people may find too irritating. Before buying lip balm, read the following product labels to make sure there are no ingredients you may be allergic to.
2. Avoid using lip balms that contain fragrance, taste or coloring agents. For some sensitive users, these lip balms may dry out the lips and may even cause a stinging sensation. Choose lipsticks that are all-natural (chemical-free) and don’t contain any unwanted additives.
3. Use moisturizing lipstick. Most cosmetics brands have moisturizing lipsticks, including Clinique, Dior, Benefit, Revlon, and Laura Mercier. If you prefer cosmeceuticals, just buy lipsticks with a moisturizing label.
Look to see if the ingredients include avocado oil or cocoa butter extract and any type of moisturizing oil such as coconut or olive oil.
4. Use SPF15 products to avoid damage caused by sunlight. Lips get sunburned easily. Make sure to use lip protection products before going out.
Method 2: Exfoliate and condition the lip skin
1. Use granulated sugar to rub your lips. You can use any harsh foods, but avoid irritating items like salt, which can dry out your lips.
2. Make a scrub containing honey, sugar and olive oil. Mix together one tablespoon of honey, two tablespoons of granulated sugar and one tablespoon of olive oil. Rub the mixture on your lips and let it sit for a few minutes.
3. Make coconut citrus lip cream. Combine 2 teaspoons coconut oil, 3 drops lemon juice and 1 teaspoon beeswax in a saucepan and melt over low heat, stirring constantly. If lemon juice is not available, you can also use lime juice. Pour the mixture into a glass container and let it cool and set. You can use it as a regular lip balm.
4. Rub your lips with butter, neem oil, ghee or milk before going to bed. These substances have deep nourishing effects, especially for repairing cracked lips. Wash these off in the morning.
5. Mix baking soda and water into a paste and rub it on your lips. Let it harden and then wash it off with water.
6. Aloe vera gel can be used on red, cracked or sunburned lips. Aloe vera is extra gentle and can help you eliminate the harsh damage caused by the sun's rays.
7. Rub yellow fruit slices on your lips. The phytochemicals contained in cucumber can tighten the collagen on the lips, making them plump and moisturized. Massage your lips with freshly cut cucumber slices for a few minutes.
8. Use a toothbrush to dip in the above-mentioned scrub to remove dead skin more thoroughly. Use a soft-bristled or medium-bristled toothbrush to avoid bruising your lips. You can apply the scrub to your lips with just warm water or with a toothbrush dipped in it.
Method 3: Develop good habits
1. Drink at least eight glasses of water every day. In fact, the best thing you can do for your lips, and therefore your skin, is to make sure you drink enough water. Water not only moisturizes the body, it also nourishes your skin and promotes the growth of new cells. In fact, dry lips are a sign that the body is not getting the moisture it needs.
2. Don’t lick your lips. Although it may seem counterintuitive, licking your lips to moisten them with saliva can actually dry them out.
3. Try not to bite your lips. If you bite your lip when nervous or unintentionally, chew gum to induce retention. Biting your lips can cause them to split, causing open sores that require antibiotic treatment.
4. Eat more fruits and vegetables. Foods containing vitamins B and C are especially good for the skin. If your diet is deficient in these vitamins, you may consider taking supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids are extremely beneficial to the skin and are found in foods such as fish, avocados and almonds. You can also take a daily omega-3 fatty acid supplement.
Warning: Try not to lick your lips as saliva can dry them out.
Don’t share lip balm with others as this can spread bacteria.
Throw away lip balm that is one year or more old. They can harbor bacteria.
Don’t use cheap lip balms with added flavours, as they can dry out your lips and make you want to lick them off.
Don’t use several lip products at once. Make sure your lips are given time to breathe freely.
Don’t brush your lips too hard, as this can cause bruising and pain.
