The North Face is an American outdoor brand founded in 1966.

The name comes from the coldest and most difficult to climb north slope of the mountain. The image comes from Half Dome, a mountain in Yosemite National Park, California, USA. , so the Chinese name "North Face" means exploring the most difficult and dangerous outdoor spirit.

North Face was originally a climbing equipment retail store in San Francisco. It was founded by Douglas Tompkins and his wife Susie Tompkins. Acquired by Kenneth Klopp later that year. In 2000, North Face was acquired by VF Corporation for US$25.4 million, and North Face became a wholly-owned subsidiary of the latter.

In December 2008, North filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri against The South Butt, its founder James A. Winkelman Jr., and a company responsible for the company's marketing planning. In the lawsuit, The North accused The South Butt of infringing its trademark rights and sought injunctive relief.

After the court ordered mediation, the two parties reached a non-public settlement agreement on April 1, 2010. However, in October 2012, Winkelmann admitted in court that he and his father breached a settlement agreement with North Face and agreed to pay $65,000, which would be reduced by $1,000 per month if the agreement was followed.

In May 2019, Leo Burnett Taylor-Made, a marketing specialist for North Face’s Brazilian branch, revealed that they secretly replaced photos of popular outdoor attractions in Wikipedia with North Face Photos of products to try to make those products more prominent in search engines. After widespread media coverage and criticism from the Wikimedia Foundation, North Face apologized for the behavior, and the editorial actions for product placement were rolled back.
