Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz founded a coffee company called Il Giornale after failing to lobby Starbucks bosses to accept espresso. In 1987, the boss of Starbucks transferred its business to Schultz, and the new trademark was a combination of Starbucks' Siren and Il Giornale's more recognizable green.
This logo should have been used by Howard Schultz when he founded the daily coffee company. The short, tall, grande, venti, and trenta cups currently used by Starbucks also follow the design of Il Giornale.
