1. Farewell to Xin Jian at Furong Tower
Tang Dynasty: Wang Changling
Entering Wu in the cold rainy night, seeing off the guest Chu Shangu in the bright light. Relatives and friends in Luoyang ask each other like a heart filled with ice in a jade pot.
Translation: The cold rain spread all over Wudi and the sky all night long. After seeing you off in the morning, even the hazy distant mountains seemed lonely! When you arrive in Luoyang, if your relatives and friends in Luoyang ask about me, please tell them that my heart is still as crystal clear and pure as the ice in the jade pot!
2. Two poems about returning home
Tang Dynasty: He Zhizhang
When the young man left home and the elder returned home, his local pronunciation remained unchanged and his hair on his temples faded. Children who don't recognize each other laugh and ask where the guest is from.
It has been many years since I left my hometown, and recently I have been busy with people. Only the mirror lake water in front of the door, the spring breeze does not change the old waves.
Translation: I left my hometown when I was young and came back in my old age. Although my local accent has not changed, the hair on my temples has become thinner. When the children saw me, no one recognized me. They smiled and asked: Where did this guest come from?
I have been away from my hometown for many years. After returning home, I realized that the people and things in my hometown have changed too much. Only the clear water of Jinghu Lake in front of the door, which ripples in the spring breeze, is still the same as before.
3. Autumn Thoughts
Tang Dynasty: Zhang Ji
The autumn wind is seen in Luoyang City, and the writer is full of ideas. I'm afraid that I can't say it all in a hurry, and the travelers are about to open the gate again.
Translation: The autumn wind is blowing in Luoyang city, and my thoughts are racing in my heart, and I want to write a letter to the family to wish them peace. I was worried that I might not have written anything in my hurry, so I opened the envelope again and checked it before the sender was about to leave.
4. Rewarding Lotte at the first banquet in Yangzhou
Tang Dynasty: Liu Yuxi
Bashan and Chushui were desolate places, abandoned for twenty-three years. Nostalgic, I recite the flute poems in the air, and when I go to the countryside to read them, I feel like a dead person.
Thousands of sails pass by the side of the sunken boat, and thousands of trees spring in front of the diseased trees. Today I will listen to a song of Junge, and for now I will have a glass of wine to keep my spirits up.
Translation: He was relegated to desolate areas such as Bashan and Chushui, and spent twenty-three years in decline. Remembering old friends, I recite Wen Di's poems in vain, and when I return from exile after a long time, I feel that things are no longer the same as in the past.
Thousands of sailboats are still passing by the capsized ship; in front of the withered trees, there are thousands of thriving trees. Today I listened to the poem you recited for me, and for the time being, I use this wine to cheer me up.
5. At the foot of Cibeigu Mountain
Tang Dynasty: Wangwan
The travelers pass outside the green mountains and go boating in front of the green water. The tide is flat, the banks are wide, the wind is blowing and the sail is hanging.
Hai Ri is born and the night is over, and Jiang Chun is entering the old year. Where can I get the hometown letter? Return to Yanluoyang.
Translation: Outside the lush mountains is the road for travelers, and the rippling blue river is just the right time for boating. The tide is high, and the water between the two banks is wide. When sailing with the wind, the sail can be hung high.
The night has not yet faded, and the sun has already risen slowly over the river. It is still in the old year, and there is already a breath of spring in Jiangnan. I don’t know when the letter I sent home will arrive. I hope the geese returning from the north will take it to Luoyang.
