Interesting talk about seals·Deng Sanmu

"Deng Sanmu": Deng Sanmu (1898-1963), formerly known as Tie, also known as Chun Tie, was a scholar in science, also known as Tianfu and Deng Meng. The number is manure and scattered wood, and the number is one foot in the evening. Shanghainese. Calligrapher and seal carver. In his early years, he learned calligraphy from Xiao Tuian, and later learned seal cutting from Zhao Guni. He has held many exhibitions of epigraphy, calligraphy and painting, and has produced countless seals in his life. His handed down works include "Copying the Official Seal of the Western Han Dynasty", "The Seal of the Leopard Skin Chamber", "The Seal of the Three Long and Two Short Periods", "The Chronological Seal of the Toilet Slip Building", "Manuscripts of Gao Shi's Seals", "Travel in Beijing", "Seal Engraving", "Dung Man Seal Making", "Deng San Wood Seals", "History of the Evolution of Chinese Calligraphy", "Selected Poems of Deng San Mu", etc.

"Smell for Ten Thousand Years" Seal

This is a unique seal of one party. Deng Sanmu’s original name was Tie. In his youth, after his calligraphy and seal cutting rose to prominence in Shanghai’s literary world, many counterfeit calligraphy and seal cutting products signed “Tie” appeared in the society. This is the same as the “Forever” and “Phoenix” trademarks of famous Shanghai bicycles. It is somewhat similar to being counterfeited by a foreign manufacturer. Deng Tie couldn't bear it anymore, so he decided to take the name "Shit Man" to make his name known to the world. As expected, no one would imitate him anymore. "Shi" also means to remove excrement, and excrement means to sweep, clean up, and clean away the filth. For example, "Zuo Zhuan: The Third Year of Zhao Gong": "The excrement of small people removes the ruins of the ancestors." Also, "Xunzi · Strengthening the Country": "If there is no excrement in the hall, the grass in the suburbs will not be able to see the open grass." Yang Liang notes: "In the hall If the excrement has not been removed, there is no time to look at the grass in the countryside." Therefore, "dung man" actually means to remove social pollutants. Zhang Shizhao once wrote a poem saying that the dung man is "a weird person with weird behavior and weird words, and he has the right way to ruin his village." Deng Dungweng did have many "abnormal things" during his lifetime. He lived in Maoyili, Shanhaiguan Road, Shanghai. He named his room "Toi Jian Building", and then he carved a small seal on himself saying "The stink will last for thousands of years"; "Husband", "Made by three odors", "Wall of dung and soil", "Guardian of the capital's toilet", etc. are all linked to "dung" and "toilet". When I held a personal calligraphy and seal cutting exhibition, I made invitations out of toilet paper.

"One Foot Scattered Seal"

This square seal carved by Deng San is related to his unfortunate experiences in his later years, which also shows his positive and optimistic nature. In 1960, Deng Sanmu had to have his left foot amputated due to blockage of blood vessels in order to save his body and life, so he nicknamed it "Yizhi", which was taken from the allusion of "Kui Yizu". Legend has it that Kui was one foot in ancient times, so it was also nicknamed "Yizhi". Kui". The choice of "One Foot San Seal" as the seal also illustrates Deng Sanmu's unique strong character and free spirit. This seal imitates the Han Dynasty's red and white seals, which are flat and contain changes. The two characters "Yizhi" are painted with few red inscriptions and occupy a small area. The two characters "scattered seal" are many painted and occupy a large area. They are written in white and use both square and round pens. Change and unity give people a sense of beauty.
