Yandun has a long history. When fighting against Japanese pirates in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, the common people used stones and soil to build "mounds" on the Lion Mountain fort, which were called beacon towers. Whenever Japanese pirates invaded, they built "mounds" on the soil. Fire and smoke were lit on the pier to convey messages to the eight villages in the four villages, hence the name Yandun.
