Xujiahui used to be one of the four sub-centers in downtown Shanghai, and now it is one of the central activity areas and one of the top ten commercial centers in Shanghai. It starts from Wanping Road in the east, Yishan Road in the west, Guangyuan Road in the north and Lingling Road in the south, covering an area of 4.04 square kilometers.
Xujiahui Commercial Center is planned at 1988, and the whole project is divided into three phases. The first phase of the project started at 1992 and was completed at the end of the 20th century. The computer market in this region is densely distributed, with abundant commodities and extensive consumer groups, so Xujiahui has also become one of the areas where Shanghai citizens buy computers and digital products. At the same time, there are also many businesses engaged in luxury goods, medium and high-grade clothing, various entertainment and catering industries in this area.
The origin of place names:
Xu Guangqi was a great scientist in the Ming Dynasty who had great influence in the history of science in China. He devoted his life to the research of astronomy, calendar, mathematics, water conservancy and agriculture, co-edited the Elements of Geometry with Matteo Ricci and wrote the Encyclopedia of Agriculture.
He once lived and worked in Shanghai, ran a farm at the intersection of Hongqiao Road, Puhuitang Road, Zhaojiabang Road and Huashan Road, engaged in agricultural scientific experiments and devoted himself to writing books. Since then, his descendants have lived in this area for a long time, so there is the origin of today's Shanghai "Xujiahui" place name.
