Ceramic characteristics of Makou kiln
Makou ceramics uses local red clay, which is fine and dense. The soil layer of red clay is very thin, and it can be dug one meter underground, so it is rich in resources. With this red clay, Makou Kiln has a solid material foundation. The pottery produced in Makou Kiln is powerful, corrosion-resistant and leakage-proof, and the pickled kimchi will not rot or go bad. Makou pottery is generally a folk ware such as pots, basins, bowls, altars, pots and stoves, which belongs to folk ceramics. Ma Kou, an old ceramist, is good at wielding a knife and carving flower patterns quickly on the altar. Excellent knife method, concise atmosphere, virtual and real, meaning that knife method is out of reach. Representative works include Eight Immortals Altar, Eighteen Bachelor's Altars, Empty Carved Twin Dragons Altar, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Water Margin, The Journey to the West, A Dream of Red Mansions, Fairy Match and so on, covering almost all historical and literary themes. It is said that the "carved pottery with golden lacquer" in the hills of southeast Hanchuan originated in the Northern Song Dynasty, and most of them are civil utensils such as altars, jars, pots and bowls. They are elegant and generous in shape, simple and heavy in glaze color and beautifully decorated. The main part is mainly men's scratching patterns, and the secondary part is set off by women's scratching patterns, with clear priorities. After burning, there are many colors such as orange red, purple brown, sauce red, purple red and bronze, which are solemn and attractive. Most of the kilns in Makou are small utensils, and the stoves are portable stoves commonly used by Hubei people for heating in winter, which are mostly used by the elderly. The local dialect calls them "fire altars". Pottery makers like to decorate a pair of small frogs at both ends of the handle, which not only increases the load-bearing of the handle, but also looks lively and interesting. There are antique candlesticks, small and practical heaters, carved pots and plain ceramic pillows. Makou Kiln in Hanchuan is famous for producing all kinds of jars, so it is also called "jar kiln". Hubei used to call "daughter" jar. Before the daughter gets married, the man will send a jar of wine, and the woman's food is often packed in various jars. Therefore, "jar" became synonymous with her daughter. "Clean altar" is a necessary utensil for local weddings. Its shape is short and round, the whole body is engraved with the word longevity, and the upper and lower parts are decorated with palindromes and lotus patterns, which is beautiful and unique.
