Company history

199 1 announced its flagship product: zzt through the Potomac computer system. Zzt opened the popularity of Epic MegaGames in the industry. Then Epic MegaGames developed four games: Epic Pinball, Jill's Jungle, Rabbit at the Speed of Light and Survival of the fittest: 2097. During this period, Epic also tried to publish and sell other developers' software, such as Safari, XLand's Robbo, Heartlight and Electro Man. Epic MegaGames acquired Safari software on 1997, including the right to use all products and trademarks of the company before 1998.

1998, Epic MegaGames released the 3D first-person shooter "Illusion". Now it has grown into a series. Due to the totally self-developed 3D game engine, the company tried to develop other games based on this engine. 1999, the company officially changed its name to Epic Games, and its headquarters moved from Rockville, Maryland to Cary, North Carolina. In 2006, Epic Games released the best-selling book "War Machine" based on xbox 360 game platform, and the related progress information of developing unreal tournament 3. On August 20th, 2007, Epic Games acquired People Can Fly, a Polish game developer, and became its largest shareholder.

The core members of Epic Games include the aforementioned chief programmer tim sweeney and game planner Cliff Bleszinski, as well as Jerry O'Flaherty, who was appointed as the company's artistic director in 2003, and Laurent Delay, a top programmer in Epic Games' Cary headquarters.
