What is Cabernet?

Cabernet is a trademark, not a grape variety as some people think.

The name "Cabernet Sauvignon" was first given by Changyu Wine in the 1930s. It was named after a new type of dry red wine with Cabernet Sauvignon as the main raw material. The name "Cabernet" is translated from Cabernet, which means "all rivers flowing into the sea". Since then, "Cabernet Sauvignon Dry Red" has become Changyu's core sub-brand.

However, you may find that in addition to Changyu Cabernet, there are also dazzling names such as Great Wall Cabernet, Dynasty Dry Red Cabernet, and Weilong Cabernet. So what are they?

After the success of "Jie Baina", Chinese people followed suit one after another. For a time, all kinds of "Cabernet" appeared on the market, which was very confusing. Zhang Yu felt something bad when he saw it. He quickly registered the "Xie Baina" trademark in 2002 to declare his sovereignty.

But other companies were dissatisfied and eventually went to court and fought for eight years. In the end, the case was settled by taking a step back: the ownership of the "Jiebaina" trademark still belongs to Changyu Group. However, six wine companies including COFCO Wine Co., Ltd. and Shandong Weilong Wine Co., Ltd. are allowed to use the "Cabernet Sauvignon" trademark free of charge and indefinitely, and other wine companies are not allowed to use it again.

This is why we can see a variety of "Cabernet Sauvignon" now. However, today our focus is not on eating melons, but on the three red grape varieties related to Cabernet Sauvignon.
