What does "hanging pot" mean in "hanging pot helps the world"?
There is a strange legend recorded in Biography of Fangshu in the Later Han Dynasty: there was a man named Fei Changfang in the Eastern Han Dynasty. One day, he was drinking in a restaurant to relieve boredom, and occasionally he saw an old man selling medicine in the street, with a medicine gourd hanging to sell pills and powders. After selling for a while, the pedestrians in the street gradually dispersed, and the old man quietly got into the gourd. Fei Changfang saw it clearly and concluded that the old man was by no means an idle generation. He bought wine and meat and paid a respectful visit to the old man. Knowing his purpose, the old man led him into the gourd. When he opened his eyes, he saw Zhu Lan painted buildings, magnificent, exotic flowers and plants, just like the Qiongge in the fairy mountain, with a unique hole in the sky. Later, Fei Changfang learned magic with the old man for more than ten days. Before he left, the old man gave him a bamboo stick and rode it like a fly. When he returned to his hometown, his family thought he was dead. It turned out that more than ten years had passed. Since then, Fei Changfang can cure all diseases, drive away the plague and bring people back to life. This is just a myth and legend, but it puts a "mysterious coat" on the practitioners. Later, in order to commemorate this legendary doctor, the folk doctor hung a gourd at the door of the drugstore as a sign of practicing medicine. Nowadays, although the "hanging pot" of Chinese medicine doctors is rarely seen, the term "hanging pot" has remained.
