Suzhou announced that Canglang, Pingjiang and Jinchang in the ancient city would be merged into gusu district and Wujiang, a county-level city. After the zoning adjustment, Suzhou city will directly border Shanghai, which will help to strengthen the primacy and radiation capacity of Suzhou central city, straighten out the system and mechanism of Suzhou ancient city protection and Taihu Lake overall protection and development, and also help to reduce administrative costs and improve administrative efficiency.

Zhou Weiqiang, member of the Standing Committee of Suzhou Municipal Committee and deputy mayor, said that with the approval of the State Council and Jiangsu provincial governments, some administrative divisions of Suzhou were adjusted as follows: Canglang District, Pingjiang District and Jinchang District of Suzhou were abolished, and gusu district of Suzhou was established. The former administrative divisions of Canglang District, Pingjiang District and Jinchang District were gusu district administrative divisions. The county-level Wujiang City was abolished and Wujiang District of Suzhou City was established. The former county-level Wujiang City was the administrative area of Wujiang District.

Zhou Weiqiang said that the five counties and cities under the jurisdiction of Suzhou are among the top ten counties in China, and the central city of Suzhou has a weak primacy and insufficient radiation-driven capacity. Before the adjustment, the social development indicators in Suzhou accounted for less than 40% of the city, but after the adjustment, the indicators will account for more than half. At the same time, after the zoning adjustment, Suzhou will directly border Shanghai, further enhancing Suzhou's position and role in docking Shanghai and promoting the integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta. However, Wujiang, which owns part of the water surface and coastline of Taihu Lake, will be removed from the city and divided into districts, which will enable Wujiang District to maintain the vitality of the county system and mechanism, and gain new development advantages of urban functions, which is conducive to rationalizing the overall protection and development system and mechanism of Taihu Lake.

The reporter learned that Canglang, Pingjiang and Jinchang are the core of Suzhou, and the ancient city of Suzhou is concentrated in this area. However, the three regions all have the problems of small scale, weak financial strength and homogeneous development. The merger and establishment of gusu district will be beneficial to the unified management of the ancient city.
