Printing knowledge

Upstairs, they said they wanted to work in a design company, but they didn’t say they wanted to go to a printing factory to follow orders.

You asked a good question. It is true that without printing knowledge, the designed product will give people a headache and cause a lot of unnecessary trouble in the printing process. Therefore, here are some basic requirements:

1. When designing documents, you must try to set a higher pixel, at least 300dpi, otherwise it will easily become a low resolution. Directly affects printing quality.

2. Bleeding is required by every company and every document. Inaccuracies in registration and cutting may occur during the printing process. Normal books bleed on three sides. If it is a Wiro book, it requires bleed on four sides. Generally 2 to 3 mm. If the printing company says that the bleeding is not enough, it will be very troublesome to change it again. In the same way, corner lines and page information also need to be 3 mm away.

3. In order to make proofing and printing easy to register, the black line K100 cannot penetrate; when the black bitmap is placed on the background, it must be colored with non-hollowed black; for fake shadows, use a single K color, large C40 and M10 should be added to the black area; the backing should be smooth and natural without revealing white; if a spot color is used, please select through. Otherwise it will cause yin and yang color. When using spot colors, we recommend using a little burst of edge. If you don't know the company's standards, you can ask the printing company for help.

4. When making documents, especially boxes and Wiro books, we often use beer lines. Because for products that do not require binding, the final product still needs to be made, and the corresponding wire file must be used to make a mold that looks like the finished document for cutting or folding. Like a box, it has folding and cutting positions. We require the folding position to be made into a dotted line, and the cutting position to be made into strength. All line files must be produced as spot color overprints. Because the beer line is not output.

5. When outputting questions, be sure not to include low-level images and all fonts must be embedded, and you can also change the line. However, line transfer is not conducive to later modification of files.

6. Provide files to the printing company. You can provide the final PDF file or the layout file. If it is a PDF file, please make sure it is an OK file. For layout files, all images and fonts used must be provided to the printing company.

7. The printing company will ask you to provide a set of samples that can be used for final proofreading. Please make sure that this sample is consistent with your final document. Also ask the printing company to provide a final set of blue paper. (That is, the blue paper output from the backend), be sure to check it carefully. Even if you give the printing company a PDF, there is a risk of errors under different systems.

In addition to saddle stitching, wireless perfect binding, thread binding, and hardcover, there are also ventilated perfect bindings. Another common binding is wiro book binding, which is similar to notebooks. Use metal rings or rings made of other materials to string together books, and cardboard books, and mount them directly.

1. Saddle stitching, there is no spine, the document is bound directly from the middle.

2. Wireless perfect binding: After folding the pages, glue them directly for binding. For such books, you need to pay special attention to the backbone problem, otherwise the glue will not be firm.

3. Lock thread binding: also called string binding. Compared with wireless glue binding, it is put on line when there are threads. In this case, it will be much stronger if you apply glue again.

4. Hardcover: Hardcover books are generally bound by string binding. But there are more and more complex post-processing processes for hardcover. For example, hardcover books are all shell-covered. The shell surface is usually made by adding an extra 15mm of edging around the cover in addition to the normal cover, and the shell surface should be larger than the book itself. Please refer to the requirements of each book for details.

5. Ventilated adhesive binding: According to the principle that oil and water are incompatible, when we are adhesive binding, we must always avoid ink in the place where the glue is applied. If there is ink, we must remove it when sorting the documents. Use a white block to cover it (this is usually handled by the printing company and does not need to be handled by the designer himself). But you don’t have to worry about this problem with ventilated adhesive installation. After the book is strung together, a special machine will be used to polish the spine of the book so that the glue will be directly applied to the white paper instead of the ink.

Generally, hardcover books are paperback. The biggest difference between paperback books and hardcover books is the seal and shell. Each printing company's standards will be different. Please ask the appropriate company specifically.

There is also a common Wiro book binding. When we are making documents, under normal circumstances, except for the spine edge, the other three sides require 3 mm of bleed. However, the Wiro book requires bleed on all four sides because it has no spine and is cut on all four sides. Then use a special mold to punch the small hole in the spine of the book, and then pass a ring made of the specified material through it to make it.

There is another kind of book called a cardboard book. When it is produced, it is not much different from a normal document. The main difference is in the printing and binding process. However, when making documents, be sure to make them double-page.

Because time and space are limited, I will write these. If you have any questions, please send a Baidu message. I also hope that the designers in the pre-press company can produce better documents that more closely meet printing requirements.
