New Zealand study abroad bank card processing method
When you formally open an account, you need to bring your identity certificate and address certificate.
There are two ways to prove identity:
You can use your passport, but pay attention to the visa on it. If it is an electronic visa, please also prepare the printed paper version with you and show it to the bank staff. It is not possible to show the visa in the mobile phone or email to the teller! It must be a printed paper version! (Knock on the blackboard! Focus! ! )
Nz driver's license+another id. For example, when you open an account in another bank after staying in New Zealand for a period of time, a credit/debit card with your name on it can usually hold such identification. However, for friends who have just arrived in New Zealand, passports are the most convenient.
There are several ways to prove the address:
Go directly with the address confirmation letter, which can be your rental contract, the address confirmation letter issued by the school, or the bill sent to you by other companies at this address.
If you don't have any friends on it, the bank will take your passport to help you register your information and send a letter to your address. Although it will take a little longer, you can get the address letter issued by the bank and then apply for a bank card.
Common bank card banks in New Zealand
1.ANZ of ANZ Bank:
ANZ Bank Group, referred to as ANZ Bank for short, is one of the four largest banks in New Zealand and the largest financial services group in New Zealand. ANZ is also one of the top 50 banks in the world.
2. BNZ Bank of New Zealand:
The Bank of New Zealand (BNZ) is one of the four largest banks in New Zealand. BNZ opened its first bank branch in Auckland on 186 10, and then opened another branch in Dunedin, South Island on 186 10. Since then, BNZ has been providing banking and financial services to New Zealand nationals until now.
3. Oakland Savings Bank:
ASB is one of the four largest banks in New Zealand, and its full name is Auckland Savings Bank. ASB Bank is a bank operating in New Zealand and is owned and controlled by Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
4. Westpac's Westpac:
Westpac is the second largest bank in New Zealand, and its English name is Westpac, which is a mixed conjunction of Westpac. It is an Australian bank and financial service provider headquartered in Sydney, Australia; Westpac, which operates in New Zealand, is a subsidiary of Australia.
If you want to open an account in these New Zealand banks, the staff who open an account for the first time will ask for passport and address information, and then open an account. It is suggested to open a checking account for normal consumption and a savings account for short-term unused funds to earn interest.
New Zealand bank cards can be used to withdraw cash and spend money locally, but they do not have the function of online payment. Therefore, you can also choose to apply for a Visa debit card, which can be used for online payment, telephone payment and consumption abroad. Its function is similar to a credit card, but it can't be overdrawn, and it needs to be deposited before it can be used.
Note that Visa debit card charges an annual fee, and ASB is 6 dollars for 6 months.
Matters needing attention in handling bank cards in New Zealand
1. All banks, large and small, in New Zealand are closed every Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.
2. For international students, THENATIONALBANK is the cheapest (there is no charge for international students), and the service is very humanized and the efficiency is relatively fast (the so-called fast is also relative to the overall backwardness of New Zealand's service industry). Its symbol is a dark horse, and the iconic color of the bank is green.
3. To open a dollar account, you need to deposit 500 dollars at a time (this is not a large sum for friends who come to New Zealand for the first time, right? ), because the current exchange rate of US dollars against New Zealand dollars is too low, so it is too much to directly change all of them into New Zealand dollars now. It is better to save them for a while and then see the market.
4. Materials required for card application: a) Passport; B) letter of admission; C) Address in New Zealand; D) It's better to have a contact number (it's only for friends, and the bank won't call).
The bank will give you a card similar to a business card with your account number on it. You can only withdraw money at the bank counter. There is a string of numbers on the card, and the last two digits are 00, which is a check (that is, cash and current account), and 0 1 is a savings account.
6. You will receive the bank card in about two weeks (the fastest). You need to sign on the back of the card immediately, and go to the nearby bank to set the password immediately. Be sure to bring your passport. The password of New Zealand bank card is only 4 digits, which is very unsafe. Pay attention to confidentiality when you swipe your card on the street in the future.
7. Only the National Bank can provide credit cards (VISA or Master cards) for international students who have been in China for less than half a year, and there is no annual fee.
8. When you swipe your card to buy something in the supermarket, the cashier often asks you, "Do you need cash?" That is, ask if you need to withdraw cash. I advise you not to say yes, because now the Bank of New Zealand has regulations that as long as you don't withdraw money from the bank's ATM, you will be charged.
