People celebrate the New Year in Chongqing, but their credit cards are stolen abroad

During this Spring Festival, 31-year-old Xiaowen was very depressed. On New Year's Eve, she and her family were having New Year's Eve dinner at home in Jiangbei District. Her credit card was stolen three times in a row. The card address was in Bangladesh, resulting in a loss of tens of thousands of yuan. At present, Jiangbei District Police have intervened in the investigation.

Consumer reminder is a scam

Xiaowen lives in Shimahe, Jiangbei District. Between 7:30 and 8:00 on New Year’s Eve, Xiaowen’s mobile phone received 3 messages in a row. The text message reminded her that she had three credit card purchases, namely 81,566 yuan, 44,275 yuan and 40,783 yuan. It was all in English and had several letter prefixes in front of the consumption amount.

"My credit card limit is only more than 30,000 yuan. When I saw the amount was so high, I thought it was a scam." Yesterday, Xiaowen told the Chongqing Evening News reporter.

After 1 o'clock in the morning, when the guests left, Xiaowen thought of this strange text message again. She called the credit card customer service center for consultation and found that there were indeed three purchases. The customer service staff told her that the purchases occurred in Bangladesh and the amount consumed was more than 160,000 Bangladeshi currency, equivalent to more than 13,000 yuan.

The fraudulent use was used to purchase air tickets

Xiaowen quickly went to Shimahe Police Station to report the incident and called the credit card customer service center to freeze the credit card. On the way to the police station, Xiaowen received another consumer text message and another credit card transaction. The location was in the United Arab Emirates. Because the transaction was frozen in time, the transaction was shown as unsuccessful.

According to the police at the police station, it is not uncommon for credit cards to be stolen overseas. Currently, the police have launched an investigation.

After investigation, Xiaowen’s credit card purchased 4 tickets on the official website of a Bangladeshi airline. Xiaowen sent an English email to the airline, requesting a freeze on consumption. On the fourth day of the Lunar New Year, the airline responded that someone had indeed purchased a ticket on the official website. Only one ticket had been used, and the airline had frozen the remaining three tickets.

Currently, the airline is waiting for information from the bank on Xiaowen’s credit card transaction details and card number.

Credit card account was stolen

Police analyzed that the credit card was stolen and may have been caused by the leakage of personal information.

Xiaowen’s credit card that was stolen has been used for seven or eight years. He has never lent the card to anyone else. This has never happened before. The card was in his wallet when it was stolen this time. Information How to leak?

Xiaowen introduced that due to work reasons, she goes abroad every year and uses this credit card abroad.

Yesterday, the reporter learned that for this kind of credit card with the VISA logo, when swiping the card for consumption in foreign VIP channels, you only need to use the card number and the three numbers on the back of the card.

According to police analysis, there are several possibilities for the credit card account number to be leaked. One is that it was accidentally leaked while chatting online, or it may have been infected by a Trojan horse program and the account was stolen during online consumption. Another possibility is that it was stolen in a shopping mall. When swiping a card for consumption, someone secretly remembers the account number - remembering the account number is very simple, you only need to remember a few numbers, and other numbers are printed on the receipt printed by the POS machine.

Validity period of account number and card number

Do not tell anyone else

China UnionPay stated that it is recommended that cardholders use magnetic stripe cards that they frequently swipe at merchants or withdraw cash from ATMs. Replace it with a financial IC card (i.e. chip card), which will greatly improve security. When making purchases at merchants, try to avoid leaving your bank card out of sight. When entering your password, cover it as much as possible. Be careful to identify "malfunctions", "upgrades" or so-called "announcements" requiring transfers posted on ATM machines. Banks and UnionPay will not require cardholders to remit money to designated accounts.

On the other hand, online shopping prevents phishing. The ID number, bank card number, password, SMS verification code, as well as the credit card validity period and verification code (the last three digits of the number on the signature strip on the back) are all important information related to the security of the account funds, so be sure to keep them properly. Any request for an SMS verification code is a scam.

What should I do if it is stolen? China UnionPay stated that you should call the card-issuing bank or payment institution immediately and freeze or report the loss of the card or account in a timely manner. Some payment institutions require cardholders to provide a police report receipt. It is recommended that cardholders call 110 for consultation before going to the police station to report a crime.
