What is the origin of the surname "Min"?
Min's surname is mostly Hui people. There is a local proverb that says, "Hui people have no pig surname, and pig surname has no Hui people." Of course, this is just people's fabrication, and there is no proven research. According to an old man named Minhui in Lintan County, Gannan Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, in the 12th year of Hongwu in Ming Dynasty (1379), three ancestors came to Zhou Tao with Mu Ying, the general of the Western Expedition (Lintan was called in ancient times). One of them lives in the old city, one in Minjiazui Village, Changchuan Township, and one in Hasantan Village, Biandu. According to historical records, there was indeed a man named Min among the generals of Mu Ying's Western Expedition. (See "Lintan Muslims and Mosques") The Hui people surnamed Min are mainly distributed in Lintan area in southern Jiangxi.
