Where the best olives come from and in which country.
The world's olive oil producers are concentrated in Mediterranean countries, mainly Spanish, Italian, Greek, Tunisia, Turkish, Syrian and Moroccan, which account for 90% of the world's total olive oil production. Spain, Italy and Greece are the three largest producers and exporters of olive oil in the world, accounting for 3/4 of the global olive oil production in 200 1-2002. The main producer of olive oil is also the main consumer of olive oil. Italy, Spain, Greece, France, Portugal and Syria are the main consumers of olive oil. At present, the total consumption of olive oil in the world market has exceeded 2600 thousand tons. In 20001-02, the total consumption of EU countries was 1893 thousand tons, accounting for 78% of the world consumption. Coupled with the producer's self-production and self-marketing, the actual consumption may be even greater. Other non-major consumers are mainly the United States, Australia, Japan, Canada and Brazil. In 20001-02, the consumption of olive oil in these five countries was188,500 tons, 27,500 tons, 3 1.5 million tons, 24,000 tons and 22,500 tons respectively. Greeks consume an average of 25 kilograms of olive oil every year, ranking first in other countries. The per capita annual consumption of Spain, Italy, Portugal and France is 12.6kg, 12.3kg, 6.9 kg and10.4kg respectively. Spain ranks first in the world in olive oil production and export; Italy ranks second in the world in olive oil production, but it is the largest consumer, exporter and importer.
