Why do the elderly get denture stomatitis easily?
Yangtse evening post
Dr. Fan Yuan, Department of Dentistry, Pulp and Mucosa.
Denture stomatitis is an inflammatory injury of oral mucosa caused by wearing removable denture, and its color is red. Most denture stomatitis is related to Candida albicans, the main pathogen of which is Candida albicans, which is common in the elderly. The mucosa is bright red and edema, or there are yellow-white striped or spotted pseudomembranes. The patient felt dry mouth and burning pain in the mouth.
The oral health status of the elderly is generally poor. With the increase of age, the thickness of oral mucosa becomes thinner, dries, shrinks, and the elasticity decreases, and the function of salivary glands decreases, resulting in a small amount of sticky saliva. Food residues are easy to stick between oral mucosa and denture and are not easy to self-clean. At the same time, saliva changes from acidic to alkaline, which is beneficial to the proliferation of candida and its invasion of oral mucosa. In addition, poor hygiene and cleanliness of dentures, wearing dentures at night, diabetes, long-term inappropriate antibiotic treatment, immunodeficiency, lack of vitamins, folic acid and iron, dry mouth caused by drugs and smoking are all risk factors for inducing diseases.
