Nanjing University began as Sanjiang Normal School founded in 1902. It has since gone through historical periods such as Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, and National Central University. In 1950, it was renamed Nanjing University.

In 1952, some departments were adjusted out and merged with the School of Arts and Sciences of Jinling University, which was founded in 1888, and it was still known as Nanjing University.
