This turtle shell was found on the beach opposite the Environmental Protection Education Center of the World Wide Fund for Nature (Hong Kong) in Yuen Chau Tsai, Tai Po. Wang Weidong, director of the Education Department of the Foundation, said that the day before yesterday afternoon, a citizen saw five turtles swimming from the middle of the sea and then climbed onto the beach to land. One of them seems to have died after landing, and the rest of the companions returned to the water. The public informed a Filipino maid about the incident in the dormitory of the center. After inspection, she also found a dead turtle shell parked in the sand.
It was not until 9 o'clock yesterday morning that the staff of the center learned about it when they went to work, so they dug up the turtle shell buried in the sand and found that it had no breath. When Wang Weidong arrived, he witnessed a turtle swimming not far from the shore and soon disappeared. Because turtles are often released from temples near the scene, Wang is not sure whether the species is a turtle.
AFCD staff later took the turtle shell away, and the department's veterinarian confirmed that the turtle shell was about one foot long and no obvious scars were found on it, so an autopsy was needed to decide whether to make it into a specimen.
