On July 3, 2020, the Huazhong University of Science and Technology Education Development Foundation received a donation of 4 million yuan. This donation established a "Freshman Bursary" for 133 students with financial difficulties.
They will receive a stipend of 6,000 yuan each year for the next five years.
The donors of this scholarship are two elderly people in their 90s, Cui Kun, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering at Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and his wife, Professor Zhu. In recent years, the cumulative amount of donations for poor students has exceeded 10 million.
It is understood that this is not the first time they have donated to the Huazhong University of Science and Technology Education Development Foundation to help needy students.
In 2013, Academician Cui Kun and Professor Zhu donated 4.2 million yuan for the first time to establish the Diligent Scholarship, which was donated over five years.
Provide help to 45 students from poor families every year.
After completing five years of donations in 2018, the couple decided to continue donating 1.8 million yuan to the Diligent Scholarship Fund, increasing the funding quota for 15 people.
Elder Cui Kun said that in many places, poverty has delayed children's learning and education. Children are the future of the motherland. They cannot be allowed to drop out of school and stay at home because of financial difficulties. This will affect them for the rest of their lives.
We donate to establish a teaching fund.
It is to enable children to go to school well, study diligently, cultivate their patriotism, and have noble ideological and moral qualities.
In addition to providing teaching assistance to poor children, the two elderly people also donated 1 million yuan as party members to the disaster-stricken areas during this year's epidemic to support the Wuhan protests.
Mr. Cui and his wife usually live very frugally. The house they live in now is still the family building assigned by the school, and the furniture and furnishings in the house are all old.
Mr. Cui started writing books at the age of 81 and has written more than 2 million words in seven years. Mr. Cui said that he has retired now, but he still wants to do something.
So he compiled his life-long experience and collected information into a book for everyone's reference.
Money is of no use to them anymore. The old couple can spend tens of thousands of yuan every month, and the remaining money will continue to do charity and be used in meaningful places.
