East China University of Science and Technology, referred to as ECUST, is located in Shanghai. It is a university directly under the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China and the Ministry of Education. It covers science, engineering, agriculture, medicine, economics, management, liberal arts, law, and art.

It is a national key university in 11 disciplines including philosophy, education, etc., and ranks among the "World-class Discipline Construction Universities", "211 Project", and "985 Project Advantageous Discipline Innovation Platform".

Selected into the National High-level University Publicly-sponsored Postgraduate Program, the Innovation Capacity Improvement Plan for Colleges and Universities, the Subject Innovation and Talent Introduction Plan for Colleges and Universities, the Top-notch Student Training Plan in Basic Subjects 2.0, the Double Ten Thousand Plan, the Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Plan, and the New Engineering Research and Practice Project.

East China University of Science and Technology, formerly known as East China Institute of Chemical Technology, was established in 1952 by the chemical engineering departments of Jiaotong University, Aurora University, Datong University, Soochow University, and Jiangnan University. It was renamed in 1993.

In 1956, it was designated as one of the first schools in the country to recruit graduate students; in 1960, it was designated as a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education; in 1996, it became a key university under the national “211 Project”.
